NIH Researchers say cut 300 calories from your diet will encourage weight loss

In recent years, restricted calorie diets have become less popular as compared to diets that focus more on what you eat exactly (asless meat) Or when you eat (asintermittent fast) But now an interesting new study published inThe Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinologyfound that this may not be all that would take a lot of calories to reduce your waistline and give yourcardiac health a boost.

The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, asked 150 participants aged 21 to 50 years had an average weight to reduce their calorie consumption by 25% over two years and told 75 people in the control group to continue as usual. During the first six weeks, those in the group restricted calories ate their meals in clinical centers and continued to be counseled on how to reduce their calorie consumption over the next six months. Meanwhile, they managed to eat 20% fewer calories. But then they began to drag, and by the end of two years, most had reduced their calorie intake by 12%, or about 300 calories.

However, researchers were surprised to find that even this relatively modest reduction involved a variety of benefits. On average, those who followed the trial restricted calories lost about 16 pounds, of which 71% was fat. They also had lower levels of cholesterol andarterial pressure and improvement of insulin resistance and metabolic rate.

"We expected an improvement in [certain] of cardiometabolic factors because ofweightloss, "William kraus, Cardiovascular genomics professor at Duke University and the chief leader of the study,told NPR. "But ... we were not expecting the level of improvement we've seen."

The findings are important in light of the national concern about the current epidemic of obesity in America. According to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), theThe average American is now clinically considered obese.
