New research shows that too much physical work can harm your mind.


It is logical that our jobs can have a huge impact on our general mentality and well-being, especially in the middle of a pandemic when many work remotely or on front lines. And for those who jostle beyond 9 to 5 normal, long hours and high stress levels can result in a professional exhaustion, fatigue and anxiety, among other worrying side effects. But that's not all: recent research has revealed thatJobs that require physical work can actually harm your brain, too much.

The study, which has been published inBorders in human neuroscience, reported that physical stress, including demanding activity and working conditions, was linked to poor memory performance and a smaller hippocampus - thebrain regionRelated to memory, learning and emotions.

To reach this conclusion, a team of scientists has examined 100 people over 60, who were on the workforce for about 40 years. They compared their brain analyzes with their professional stories and responded to questionnaires on their way of life, exercise habits and recent job experience.

Surprisingly, many people who felt physically exhausted had office jobs, which means being chained to your office can be just as mentally draining as a difficult workforce.

But all physical constraints did not have the same effect. Regular exercise and leisure activities (such as hiking) can improve cognitive health and thought, according to the study. In fact, people who worked regularly during their downtime had a better reminder of memory and a large volume of hippocamps to those who did not get up and often move.
