The deleted photo: a mystery of the Royal House of Spain
The public was able to see an unknown area of the Zarzuela Palace, but the image only lasted a few hours on Instagram.
Until 2024, Spain was one of the few monarchies that did not have a presence on social networks. Although it already has an official account on Instagram (@casareal.es), this profile is another example of the extent to which the Royal Family values discretion and seeks to control the information that goes out to the public, despite the fact that it has not been free of scandals. For this reason, the public and the tabloid press are always aware of the smallest details, so when they deleted a seemingly harmless photograph of Queen Letizia, the mystery did not wait long. This is the little that is known.
The event
On April 10, 2025, the queen consort, Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, had a busy schedule of meetings with representatives of the Madrid Design Festival, the Brain Advisory Council to support health plans, and the ANAR Foundation, an organization dedicated to the defense of children and young people at risk. As a novelty, these meetings were recorded and later uploaded to the official Instagram account, something that was seen by the public as an attempt by the Royal House of Spain to show a more natural and close monarchy. The king, Felipe VI, also held meetings that day.

A different scenario
What caught attention was that, unlike other royal engagements that are attended to in offices previously prepared for it, these Letizia meetings occurred in a room in the Zarzuela Palace that was unknown to the public. It was a room with several sofas, minimalist decoration and a table with a detail that did not go unnoticed: a large portrait with a photograph of Princess Leonor with her parents and her sister, Infanta Sofía. The image was taken on the day Leonor swore the Constitution in the Congress of Deputies, an act that she had to perform as she was next in line to the throne, that is, she will most likely be the future queen of Spain.
Image removed
Although both the videos and the images were well received by followers on Instagram, who left comments, mostly positive, simply highlighting that it was a room they had never seen, just a few hours later the Royal Family decided to delete the publication. Instead, they published photographs showing Letizia's initial greeting with meeting attendees and then conversations in another, more formal office, but everything else was deleted. Until now, the reasons for this decision are not known. Perhaps the queen, known for her strict position on defending her privacy and that of her family, considered that it was a protocol error to show an area of the palace that until then could be perceived as “private.”

Online presence
The Royal House of Spain opened its official Instagram account, @casareal.es, in June 2024, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the reign of Felipe VI. Although the official reason was to generate greater closeness between the monarchy and the Spanish people, experts have said that the main objective is to appeal to new generations and create a modern connection for the future reign of Eleanor. This was evident in the photos of the first important event reflected in the account: the presence of the royal family at the Paris Olympic Games, but with an unusual role for the future queen and her sister, Infanta Sofia. Since then, the account has published both official events and more “family” moments, although everything has always been well executed.
