As one of the world's largest beauty contests, Miss Universe officially launched in 1952 with the victory of beauty Armi Kuusela from Finland. Until 2004, Vietnam participated in this challenging "beauty arena" for the first time with the representative of supermodel Hoang Khanh Ngoc. However, the Vietnamese representative did not make it into the Top 15 finals even though she won the "Queen of the Runway" award voted by the host country's press.

Consecutively, at Miss Universe 2005, Vietnam's representative Pham Thu Hang also continued to not be named to the Top 15 due to her lack of competition experience and rather rushed preparation time. In 2008, at home, Miss Universe Vietnam Nguyen Thuy Lam brought the first achievement to Vietnamese beauty when she was named in the Top 15 list of the competition.

However, this "beauty arena" is not easy to conquer. In the following years, Vietnamese representatives did not achieve any significant achievements. Vo Hoang Yen (2009), Vu Hoang My (2011), Luu Thi Diem Huong (2012), Truong Thi May (2013), Pham Huong (2015), Le Hang (2016) and Nguyen Thi Loan (2017) all left "empty-handed" even though they tried their best and received enthusiastic support from the audience. Until 2018, Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Niê made history when she reached the Top 5 finals. She is also a strong inspiration about the growth journey of a rural girl overcoming all barriers and social prejudices to live as herself. This success is still the pinnacle of Vietnamese beauty at Miss Universe, and will be difficult to surpass in the near future.

After that, the "junior" generations such as Hoang Thuy (2019), Nguyen Tran Khanh Van (2020) only reached the Top 20 and 21, while Kim Duyen reached the Top 16 in 2021. Most recently, Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen (2024) reached the Top 30.

At Miss Universe 2025, Vietnam sent a beauty representative, Miss Huong Giang, to participate in the "race" in Thailand. Despite making a special impression thanks to her confident demeanor, good communication skills and outstanding fashion style, Huong Giang still stopped when she was not named to the Top 30 list. Although fans are extremely regretful, it cannot be denied that Miss Universe is a challenging "playground" that perhaps Vietnamese beauty will need more time to conquer.
