A common medical cause of nails subject to breaking is iron deficiency anemia. This can occur if there is a lack of iron in someone's diet, an inability to absorb iron, blood loss or even pregnancy. "Iron helps hemoglobin in your red blood cells carry oxygen," saysDimitar Marinov, MD, Ph.D., a specialized nutritionist inNutrition and dietary. "When developing iron deficiency, the ability of your red blood cells to wear oxygen is reduced, resulting in reduced oxygen delivery to the nails and the development of fragile and curved nails."AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

There are some nail symptoms for searching if you think you haveiron deficiency anemia. The first is dry and brittle fragile nails that seem divided or have vertical ridges, saysNELYA LOBKOVA, Dpm, aCertified Board Podiatrist At New York. Another is a condition called Koilynychia-or "spoon nails" - can cause nails to become flat or concave. Some Koilynychia patients note that their concave nails could even hold a drop of water.

If any of these symptoms seem familiar, look for the other signs of iron deficiency anemia. These include shortness of breath, pale skin, muscle weakness, cardiac arrhythmias, vertigo and cold hands and feet, explains Marinov.

Vitamin B deficiencies can also cause fragile nails.

There are some vitamin B failures that can lead to fragile nails, but the most common is bound to vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anemia, causing fragility for the same reason as iron deficiency anemia: reduction of oxygen levels in the nails.

Advanced vitamin B12 deficiency can also lead to a condition called melanonychia. It is at this moment that the nails become blue or black with longitudinal and longitudinal black trails and brownish pigmentation, says Marinov. Other vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms include anemia, tongue inflammation, shortness of breath, pale skin, muscle weakness, cardiac arrhythmias, vertigo and cold hands and feet explains Marinov.

Change your diet can help you.

Fortunately, iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies are not permanent and can often be fixed with some updates to your diet. According to Healthline, if you have iron anemia, you will want to increase your consumption ofIron-rich foods, like meat, fish, poultry, beans and lentils. Foods rich in vitamin C - such as citrus fruits and cruciferous vegetables - can help your body absorb this iron and use it more easily.

If you have vitamin B12 deficiency, you will want to eat more foods containing nutrient to restore the levels of your body. According to webmd, these included Beef, liver, chicken, fish, crustaceans and eggs. With iron deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency, your doctor may prescribe additional supplements to help your body get nutrition for which it requires.
