A new study reveals a huge side effect of walking more

Your brain is composed of gray material or tissue containing nerve cells and white materials, which is the tissue that connects nerve cells via nerve fibers. In the simplest possible terms, "the gray matter of our brain is the computer and the white matter is the cables that connect all together and transmit signals", writtenMostwellHealth.

For many years, neuroscientists have prioritized for many years and studied much more than white matter. Much of this research has helped scientists discover that gray matter is not static or non-improving after adulthood. For example, this study published inNeurobiology of learning and memory found that regular exercise among an older adult group resulted in a large volume of the brain.

But what impact does exercise have white matter?Agnieszka Burzynska, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience and Human DevelopmentColorado State UniversityAnd the co-author of this last study, determined to answer this question.

She and her team expressed the hypothesis that white matter is just as responsive to exercise as a gray matter before conducting their experience. To study this topic, a group of 250 older adults (older than 60 and over) has been led to have their aerobic fitness level and its cognitive function tested. MRI brain scans were also used to establish basic white material readings. From there, everyone has been separated into three experimental cohorts. It is important to note that all participants have been considered generally healthy, but have led extensive lifestyles.

The first, which served as a control, participated in a stretching and equilibrium training program three times a week. The second group took a fast walking plan three times a week for 40 minutes at a time and the third group took dance classes three times a week.

Once six months passed, everyone returned to the research team's laboratory for a series of monitoring assessments measuring cognition, memory, fitness and white matter.

To the surprise of the research team, the walking group showed the greatest improvement in the skills in memory and white matter. Walkers and dancers returned after six months of much better fitness, and both groups showed improvements in white matter. But it is the walkers who displayed the most important heights of the size of the nerve fibers and the healing of the lesions (two volume indicators of white matter and health). In addition, walkers have done much better on memory tests than dancers.

Conversely, adults in the control stretching group have actually shown signs of decline of white matter. Compared to their initial test scores, many have done worse after only six months of stretching with limited additional physical activity. The brain scans also revealed evidence of the deterioration of white matter. This does not mean that stretching is bad, more than it does not seem to provide the benefits of cognitive health doing by aerobic exercises. Some walks a week improve memory

This study has more than one major twig. From a scientific point of view, the collection of tangible evidence indicates that white matter is malleable and capable of being improved late in adulthood. This conclusion is a major at the edge of our understanding of the human brain.

From a more practical perspective, the study authors say that their work suggests that everything you need is a few quick walks a week to help keep your white life healthy and your net memory.

With respect to why walking is more beneficial than dance: "Dancers have spent some of their time looking at the instructors and not to upset a lot," Dr. Burzynska has theorized. "It probably affected their results."
