Americans buy physical books more than you think.
Thank you Booktok, the cocovated pandemic or good marketing tactics, but more than a billion new books are sold each year in the United States, more than 825 million cinema tickets sold in the United States And Canada, like Slate reported. Even more remarkable is that around 85% of these books of books concern physical books (read: not electronic books). So, we cannot say that we are surprised that the greatest American bookseller, Barnes & Noble, continues to open stores across the country.

Barnes & Noble activities have been up since 2021.
As Best life reported in January , CEO of Barnes & Noble James Daunt made an interview with NPR, during which he said that the key to his business was to restore a sensation of neighborhood bookstore.
"The key computer IT I have is that this is the bookseller team and this is how you take all this large number of books and organize them and display them in a way that really engages with your local community," he explained. "Leave the teams of each store. The vast majority of them will do it exceptionally, and your stores will become better and busier and the company will prospere."
On the other hand, he said that Amazon sells "boring books", which in fact helped Barnes & Noble.
“We used to have superb huge medical sections that taught doctors and nurses and all other professionals. But these books are very boring, ”he shared. "More. You go to Amazon, Bump, it happens through your mailbox three minutes later."
Daunt is not only grandiose: according to Bloomberg , Sales of Barnes & Noble have increased regularly since 2021. In 2024, the bookseller opened 57 stores, more than throughout the decade from 2009 to 2019. And in January, they announced its intention to open more than 60 stores, bearing their total of almost 700.

Barnes & Noble also acquires Books Inc.
In a press release , Barnes & Noble announced that it acquired the Bay BookSeller Bookseller Inc., 174, in a bankruptcy sale of $ 3.25 million.
Books Inc. Currently includes 9 locations, including two outposts at San Francisco International Airport. Barnes & Noble confirmed in the press release that all the locations would remain open, the seller of books continuing to operate independently. The main difference is that these stores will have access to the barnes & noble distribution network and modern technology.
"This agreement will guarantee that Book Inc.'s inheritance will continue in the foreseeable future," said CEO of Books Inc. Andy Perham said in a press release. "With the deep resources of Barnes & Noble and world class support, Books Inc. will be able to quickly modernize its operations so that we can focus on what we do best: connect people with books, ideas and each other."
Last year , Barnes & Noble has acquired Denver, Colorado Tattered blanket Books books after having filed a record. Likewise, Barnes & Noble kept the four open locations (in addition to airport stores), operating independently with their same teams.
As for why Barnes & Noble began to replenish independent bookstores, Daunt explained his reasoning in an interview with Modern retail ::
"It is not really barnes & noble wandering in the countryside, looking for large chains of independent bookstores and acquiring them," he said. "These are very light and rather remarkable bookstore channels, which, for all kinds of reasons, have gone bankrupt and close - literally close their doors and disappear - and we provide them with a security port, which, in our view, is a valid and important thing to do."
The strategy is also logical given the change of Barnes & Noble to do more like a district independent bookstore.
And it does not seem that the retailer will slow down anytime soon. Barnes & Noble said there was "much more to come in 2026!"
