The question of first -year "new mathematics" is only flexible on the Internet - can you solve it?

A mother from Texas asks parents to scratch her head with her recent publication on Facebook.

Are you smarter than a fifth student ? Well, at the moment, many people discover that they may not even be smarter than a first student. A mother from Texas recently went to Facebook to share a mathematical question that was given to her child as part of her first -year duties, and he left the Internet perplexed.

February 2, Tiesha Sanders shared a photo On Facebook, it showed how his daughter's answer to one of her homework questions had been marked incorrect by the teacher.

For the mathematics problem, the students were invited to "fill the missing figures". They received the number "27" and asked to fill in a table indicating how many dozens and those there were in the number. Sanders' daughter wrote "2" in the tens column and "7" in the Ones column.

The last part of the question prompted her to write how many there were, so she wrote "7".

But it was not the right answer, according to his teacher. Sanders therefore returned homework with a note requiring an explanation.

"Hello! I just wanted to ask how summer was mistaken # 3? His father and I went to his mistake again and I wanted to be sure that we were on the right track," she wrote.

The teacher replied, explaining that the right answer was actually "27". "Hello, this is the new calculation they have taught," wrote the first -year professor in Sanders. "He wants her to know that having 2 tens and 7 is the same as 27."

In his article on Facebook, Sanders expressed his frustration in the face of the answer: "The new calculation is not that!" AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

She also clarified that she was not frustrated by her daughter's teacher. "Notice of non-responsibility: I am not angry with the professor, she is teaching what she is supposed to do," wrote Sanders. "[And] do not come here as if we were the stupid, I have taught in primary in the past six years, this question is not!"

But the mother of Texas is not the only one to question the "new mathematics" which are taught in American schools. His article on Facebook has become viral, collecting more than 18,000 shares and more than 4,700 comments. In the comments section, many people shared Sanders' frustration in the face of the mathematical issue.

"Ummm, maybe I'm not too smart because I'm with summer," wrote a person. Another replied: "It made me scratch my head, I don't know how many times."

Several teachers even spoke in the comments section of the "new math" that they must teach students. "I hate teaching it! I am as confused as parents," wrote a person. Another replied: "Me too! And I teach mathematics!"

But not everyone is against this new way of teaching. Some people said that the question was "simple" and others argued that this method actually helps children better understand mathematics.

"I always explain to the teacher and parents that when we learned mathematics, that's" that's how you do it "and you memorize steps to get to the answer, where like now Children learn why it works, and thanks to this conceptual understanding, they will learn how alone and it will stick, "replied a person.

Kate Sanai , a mother of five and an educator in mathematics for 19 years, said that she was happy that Sanders had published the first -year mathematical issue to "raise awareness of conceptual teaching" educators are now pushing for students.

"But it is definitely a change of mind for many parents - because of how we have taught mathematics," wrote Sanai. "I am a baby from the 80s, so we learned many mathematics tips and rules to follow, and very little conceptual thinking."
