Meet the six dogs being trained to sniff coronavirus
These cute canines could be the best line of defense against the propagation of COVID-19.
They say that dogs are a man's best friend and it has never been more obvious than now. In addition to giving us an unconditional love andcomfort for quarantine, Dogs really prove to be just as important on the front lines in our families. In fact, these good boys (and girls!) Can even be the key to stop the propagation of coronavirus.
In March, researchers from Durham University and the London School of Hygiene and tropical medicine joined forces with a charitable organization, medical detection dogs, to see if dogs can sniffline Cvid-19. The study, which received a$ 500 £ 500 (or more than $ 600,000) British Government Grant May 15, involves a group ofThe formed dogs nicknamed the "Super Six". The pack includes two yellow labradors, a white labradood and three cockers, which will receive dead samples of the smell virus, similar to how the airport safety dogs are trained to recognize illegal substances.
Respiratory diseases are known to change bodily odors and, in the past, our canine companions have been able tomalaria, Cancer, Diabetes and Parkinson's disease, before symptoms have appeared. It's all thanks to the powerful nose of a dog, which containsMore than 300 million scented receivers. Scientists hope that these adorable puppies will be able to apply the same sensory skills to the coronavirus.
It will takesix to eight weeks to train the team, using sterilized face masks and nylon socks in a process called "odor printing". If experience succeeds, dogs will be deployed at airports and entry points around the U.K. over the next six months. Each dog would be able toScreen up to 250 people per hour.
Here is a video describing the rigorous training course:
And do not worry about four-legged friends themselves. According to experts, dogs have a verylow risk of contracting the virus. "Our dogs will be trained to a dead virus, then have no contact with the people they track, but will sniff the air around the person", representing medical detection dogs,Gemma Butlin,CNN says.
In the long run, it would be a play changer for health and safety measures around the world. The rapid procedure is potentially more accurate thanRecent security methods coronavirus, like thermal imaging, which scans only passenger temperatures. It would also eliminate the need for 14-day self-quarantine.
"The basic idea is that we can have travelers in innocently in this country that can carry CVIV-19, detect these people and isolate them from the rest of the community",Steve Lindsay, a public health entomiste from Durham University, also told CNN.
