These 3 common practices are horrible for your nails, says dermatologist

We all have bad habits, but they could really damage your health.

Bite one's nails

It is probably not surprising that Zububitsky warns against biting your nails. But his reasoning is quite horrible! (Watch the video for some alarming images.)

"Not only is [biting your nails] super insalubre, but our nails are a very common place to obtain warts, and the warts are infectious," she explains. "So, each time we bite our nails, we can transfer these warts to our mouth."

Take care of the hangnnails

If you think the picking in a hangnail is harmless, think again.

"If you do this, it could lead to an injury or an open skin in the finger or the nail, which can transfer bacteria in the skin," warns Zubritsky.

According to the dermatologist, Hangnail picking can cause an infection called Paronychia - which is the inflammation of the skin around a finger or a nail.

"These are quite painful and sometimes require oral antibiotics to treat," she adds.

Get a freezing manicure

Although your gel nails may seem well, they may not be good For You. ZUBRITSKY says that she would never get UV gel nails because a 2023 Study have shown that UV dryers used for this type of manicure can cause "DNA damage and mutations in human cells, which is one of the first stages of cancer", according to the dermatologist.

"More studies are necessary to determine how much it is a risk to health, but I, as a dermatologist, I don't take this risk," she said.

If you are known for biting your nails, choosing the hangnials or getting frost manicures, you are not alone. Zubritsky's video has obtained more than 523,700 views so far and has won more than 200 comments, several Tiktok users admitting that they have participated in these bad health habits. "I don't look at that with UV gel nails," said a person in the comments section.

Another wrote: "Not me looking at it, biting my nails."

But just because these are common practices that they are not horrible for your nails. It is never too late to start following Zubritsky's advice to avoid these mistakes.
