Although there is still so unknown about the ACIRDC, there are clear signs that have been linked to this mystery disease.

"The symptom we have associated most with this disease is cough," said Davis. "But having a cough does not necessarily mean that a dog has this particular syndrome. A cough can also be seen in many other fairly common diseases that dogs get, such as kennel cough."

Lori , DVM, Associate Professor Clinical in Texas A & M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, told KBTX affiliated with CBS that on a cough, animal owners can also notice a runny nose with ACIRDC. And over time, dogs could continue to appear more sick.

"In the more advanced cases, your pet may not want to eat, perhaps being lethargic and dragging, and in really advanced cases, have trouble breathing and have developed pneumonia," noted Teller.

The thought of a widespread mystery dog disease could be scary in the hearts of any animal owner. But ODA experts said they "suggest prudence rather than worry".

If you notice one of the symptoms associated with ACIRDC, you should bring a dog to the veterinarian for an examination. Otherwise, there are several precautions that you can take to try to protect your puppy.

The first thing that ODA advises dog owners is to ensure that their animal is up to date on all vaccinations recommended by their veterinarian.

"This may include vaccinations for canine flu, bordetella, parainfluenza and type 2 canine adenovirus," according to the Department of Health.

You should also be more careful about your puppy using bowls and municipal toys, as well as avoid putting them in environments where they can be exposed to unknown dogs.

"Socialization is important for your dog, so you could consider creating a group of known dog games which are also vaccinated," suggests the ODA.
