10 cities where it is the most expensive to heat your home, the new data show

The northern cities in the country have not even entered the top 10.


When it comes to Heating costs , you probably assume that residents of the coldest and most fanfaronal cities have the highest invoices. However, according to a new study From the HVAC Gnome team, the most expensive American cities to heat a house in winter are not exactly what you expect. Research compared the 500 largest American cities in three categories: energy costs, cost offsets and lack of energy efficiency. To achieve their results, Hvac Gnome determined the most relevant factors in each of the three categories and each attributed a weight. They then calculated the scores (over 100 points) for each city to determine its rank in each factor, each category and overall. The more the number in each category, the more expensive it is.

Detroit is at number 10, the first of the two cities in Michigan which are the top 10. The city was the 26th higher in the category of cost guards, which is made up of the following measures: the average area of the house, sharing of Houses built until 1999, the historic average number of extremely cold days in winter, the historic average number of days of degree of heating and the risk score of cold waves.

Dayton is much lower than Detroit in the category of tastes of costs, but this city is classified sixth for energy costs. This category is broken down into average price of residential electricity (as a percentage of monthly monthly monthly income) and at the average price of residential natural gas (as a percentage of the average monthly monthly income, adjusted by the cost of living).

Columbia, Missouri

The Missouri is expensive enough to heat a house; Five Top 10 cities are in this state, including Columbia, which arrives in 22nd for energy efficiency. This category is based on the following factors: efficiency score of the residential code, number of LEED certified houses and number of houses certified to energy.

Lack of energy efficiency: 10

Kansas City, Kansas (not to be confused with Kansas City, Missouri), is the most expensive seventh city to heat a house in winter. It is also the first of the two cities of the State to make the top 10. Although its score of the cost inflator falls downstairs, the lack of classification of energy efficiency is one of the highest.

Hvac Gnome stresses that the "Metropolitan Region of Kansas City is particularly favorable to a budget for people in the cold", which is why Topeka lands on the list.

Lack of energy efficiency: 1

While St. Joseph, Missouri is fifth in the general classification, this city is the least energy efficient. The study also revealed that Saint-Joseph had no LEED certified house (a durability measure).

Lack of energy efficiency: 92

With the third highest electricity prices and the largest share of houses built before 1999, Flint, Michigan, arrived at number four.

Independence, Missouri is the second city of the top 10 to be classified less economical in energy. Like St. Joseph, they also marked one in this category. They have 0 houses certified in energy stars, the more their risk of cold wave risk score is 96.31, which contributes to their overall costs.

Cleveland is not only ranked 21st for high electricity prices, but it also has the third highest natural gas prices.

Springfield, Missouri heads the list as the most expensive American city to heat a house in winter. According to Hvac Gnome, Springfield pays among the 100 largest monthly energy bills. They are tied to have the lowest residential code efficiency score, and they have the second most expensive natural gas prices.
