The new test program will mainly affect international travelers.

If you are a frequent traveler, you have probably noticed that some airports are already offering Covid test "But with immediate effect, health screening develops. The health branch of CDC travelers oversees the Travelers -based genomic surveillance program , which was initiated for the first time in 2021. Since then, the program has evolved to follow new under -variants of Covid, as well as other pathogens. These are detected by wastewater samples and voluntary nasal swabs.

As we encroach on one of the busiest hours of travel of the year, the head of the travelers' health branch Cindy Friedman , MD, tells CNN that the Institute of a Genomic Surveillance Program in Airports can help detect "new and emerging infections".

CNN reports that the genomic monitoring program for CDC travelers "will test more than 30 bacteria, antimicrobial resistance targets and viruses, including flu A and B, and the syncytial respiratory virus, known as RSV."

The program will take place in four major international airports across the United States: Boston Logan, San Francisco, Washington, Dulles International by D.C. and John F. Kennedy (JFK) in New York. Travelers are invited to participate in voluntary nasal swab up when they arrive. Although participation is not compulsory, Friedman noted that a higher number of samples could cause early detection.

According to CNN, more than 37,000 nasal samples have been taken so far. The passengers traveled from more than 135 countries and the CDC returned more than 14,000 samples for a more in -depth analysis.

At the end of the day, Friedman explained that widened tests are designed to help determine what type of virus arrives and leaves from the United States, and if they have the potential to be as dangerous as Covid.

"There is a lot of dead angles worldwide where there are limited tests and surveillance," she told CNN. "In general, we focus on airports that are international hubs and have flights from a wide range of international locations."

So, if you are traveling during this holiday season, remember to spend a few more minutes in the terminal and volunteer for a projection.
