Poitier and Diahann Carroll fell for each other in 1959.
Poitier played in Porgy and Bess opposite Dorothy Dandridge , but he fell in love with an actor who had a smaller role: Diahann Carroll , who played Clara in musical adaptation. At the time, Carroll was married to her first husband, music producer Monte Kay And Poitier was married to his first wife, Juanita Hardy . Carroll said that Poitier had bought him a large apartment and decorated it, but he had doubts about leaving his wife.

Even after Poitier divorced, he and Carroll were not married.
Poitier and Hardy separated two years after Carroll divorced her husband, but the winner of an Oscar told Carroll that he did not want to live with his daughter and go directly to another marriage.
"She asked me to leave my house, and I did it. She asked me to divorce. I went to Mexico and I had one," he said. "I made a request: to live together for six months while the parents of Diahann took care of her daughter so that I do not jump from one marriage directly in another. But she would not do it.
