You probably use a fabric softener regularly, but do you really know what it is? AccordingPhi Dang, Director ofWorkforce of home services, fabric softeners come in liquid or gel form and are often applied to linen during the rinsing cycle. The dryer leaves also enter this category. There are also laundry detergents that have fabric softeners directly.

The active ingredient of these products is generally a cationic surfactant. "This surfactant reduces electrostatic forces between the fibers, making them softer," explains Dang. "The fabric softener also often contains perfumes and other chemicals that can let a fabric feel refreshed and feeling well." But in some cases, they do more harm than good. Here are five current examples.

Silk is a delicate material that requires special washing techniques, one of which is to jump a fabric softener. "The fabric capacitor can leave a residue on the fabric which can make it less effective to repel dirt and stains," explains Dang. "This can also make tissues less breathable, which can make them more uncomfortable to wear." Breathable is one of the main reasons why people invest in silk - so you will want to maintain this feature as long as possible.

Today, many clothes for babies (especially night clothes for infants) and adults in high -risk industries are made of flame -resistant materials. These fabrics are naturally self-extinguishing and eliminate the risk of melting clothes on the skin to burn in case of fire. Because these are technical equipment, you should wash them properly.

"Most people do not know that their flames resistant clothes can lose its fire -resistant properties when treated with a softener," said Dang. "Chemicals in the fabric softener can break down chemicals resistant to flames in clothing, leaving the carrier vulnerable to burns." Read the care label closely to make sure you do not compromise your clothes and, afterwards, your safety or your child.

Many of us have various jackets, coats and puffers. And when you clean them, you shouldn't use the fabric softener. "It would be counterproductive," says Dang. "The fabric softener can really reduce the water repulsion of the fabric over time." An absorbent raincoat is the opposite of efficiency.

Microfiber clothing

Microfiber is one of our favorite materials for sportswear, training towels and cleaning towels. It easily absorbs moisture and easily imprisoned dust. But if you add a fabric softener to the mixture, these capacities could be reduced. "Microfiber clothes are made of extremely fine synthetic fibers that are woven together to create a light and durable fabric," explains Dang. The softener will cling to these tight fibers and will modify them in a non -constructive manner.
