If you buy garnishes for your burgers this weekend, you will want to avoid a family favorite: the onions of Vidalia. Often grilled and put into hamburgers, these sweet onions add a unique flavor, especially when associated with salty bacon. Fortunately, only those purchased from Wegmans are recalled. The grocery chain has published a voluntary reminder forVidalia Oignons, due to potential contamination by Listeria. So, you may want in place of yellow or red varieties.

According to the Mayo clinic,Listeria infection is a bacterial disease of food origin, and it is particularly dangerous for those who are pregnant, those over 65 and immunocompromised people. Symptoms of infection include fever, chills, muscle pain, nausea and diarrhea, which may appear between a few days or a full month after eating contaminated food. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, you can also feel headache, stiff neck, confusion or changes in vigilance, loss of balance and convulsions.

Raw vegetables often become contaminated by Listeria bacteria from the soil in which they have grown or if contaminated manure has been used as fertilizer, said Mayo Clinic.

The onion recalled were sold in three states.

According to Wegmans' reminder, potentially impacted onions were sold between June 23 and 24.

The onions were sold in Massachusetts in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Medford, Natick, Northborough and Westwood; as well as in Pennsylvania in two Wegmans stores in Erie.AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

The most affected stores were in New York, where potentially contaminated onions were sold in 46 Wegmans locations: Alberta Drive, Amherst Street, Auburn, Brockport, Calkins Road, Canandaigua, Chile-Paul, Cicero, Corning, Dewitt, Dick Road, East Avenue, Eastway, Elmira, Fairmount, Fairport, Geneseo, Geneva, Great Northern, Hold Road, Hornell, Irondequit, Ithaca, James Street, Jamestown, John Glenn, Johnson City, Latta Road, Lyell Avenue, Marketplace, McKinley, Military Road, Mt. Read, Newark, Niagara Falls Boulevard, Onondaga, Penfield, Perinton, Pittsford, Ridge-Culver, Ridgemont, Sheridan Drive, Taft Road, Transit Road and West Seneca.

Do not eat these onions - come back to them.

If you have bought in one of these Wegmans locations, you will want to give your refrigerator once, just to be safe. The affected products were sold by the book and could have a four -digit price search sticker (PLU) with number 4159 or 4166, Wegmans said in the reminder.

Wegmans ask customers who bought these onions to return them to customer service for a full refund.

According to Food Safety News, recalled products should not be consumed. But if you have eaten a recalled onion, Mayo Clinic asks you to check the symptoms of the disease and contact your doctor if you experience signs of Listeria infection.
