I am an emergency doctor and ask yourself to read this now
Vaccines actually do work because they are effective in preventing hospitalization and death.
The Delta variant is an aggressive propagation across the United States when I write this article. The hospitals of the southern states like Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Texas and Florida are submerged. The surge in many areas has been fueled by low vaccination rates, public health Lax and an extremely infectious variant. Many who refused vaccination are now dying. In the meantime, the school begins in person again across the United States. I am the father of boys aged 8 and 13 and my school district mandated masks to learn in person. I am also Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College - Thomas Jefferson University. When the School Board reviewed the issue, I attended zoom and suffered a few uninformed speeches by members of my community. Read on and to ensure your health and health of others, do not miss theseSure sign that you have "Long" Covid and may even know.
- A man stated that masks are not proven to work and damage our children. (In particular, masks work and there are significant published data to support it as well as CDC publications.)
- Another misinformed person said that vaccines were not proven to preventCOVID.
- Another person said it was his right to decide to wear a mask. She is assimilated to eat junk food - if she wanted to be fat and junk food, it was not the person's business. Of course, the essential difference is that eating out donuts in public will not potentially infect the other people from the community and thus spreading a potential illness and death.
The meeting of the school board as a whole was incredibly depressing to testify and support. Another individual stated that Covid-19 was not dangerous for children and that masks are not needed. Of course, given the new Delta variant, this statement is simply not true. We find an increase in pediatric Covid admissions. In Louisiana, pediatric hospitals are filled with COVID patients.
I did not want to talk but I felt that I had. I explained that vaccines actually work because they are effective in preventing hospitalization and death. The breakthrough infections can and occur, but individuals vaccinated are unlikely to die or be hospitalized. I have also explained the risk of revolutionary infections and a general infection to non-vaccinated individuals is why masks are needed. I also told them that the virus is more infectious than the flu and that the Delta variant is even more infectious than the British variant. The virus extends mainly inside the aerosol in the air and that is why the masks are necessary. In addition, I explained that I have lunch inside and obviously unmasked because the expected district was potentially dangerous. In hospitals, where we are hidden at any time, many epidemics have been linked to eat with others in helmets. I'm not sure I changed someone's minds, but I had to talk about these truths.
After talking, a member of the community stated that the doctor on the phone (it would be me) is questionable. He said he could find health professionals who would say the opposite of my statements. No credible doctor could refute my statements, which were accurate and measured, but the man said. I could not believe arrogance and ignorance.
In the emergency department, I continue to see COVID-infected patients who could have been vaccinated but refused. It is with a feeling of depression and frustration that I approach the subject with them. The other night, I treated an elderly patient. He was admitted to the hospital (for a non-Covid related problem) and his wife, also very elderly, was with him. I asked if they were vaccinated and they said no. He did not think the vaccine was sufficiently tested and his wife were concerned about the speed with which she arrived on the market. "Well," I told him, "CRNA vaccines are extremely safe and efficient." I explained that some of the greatest predictors of death were age. So, I explained that they played a dangerous game. "If you get Covid," I say, "You both have a very strong lucky chance." Given their age, I thought it was about more than 14%. Essentially, about 1 out of 6 - a pulling of dice. I said that no drugs or vaccine had never been granted to so many people pending approval. Most drugs approved by the FDA have studies involving thousands of people. These vaccines had studies such as surveillance data of millions of vaccine recipients. The idea we needed more data waiting for approval was frankly ridiculous.
RELATED:I am a doctor and here's how not catch delta
Well, we are here, fighting with the school board on common-mind preventive interventions to protect our children and that people refusing safe vaccines in favor of death. I do not know how to solve this situation. In one way or another, we need to remove the policy and return to public health and medicine for this crisis. Covid is not going anywhere right now. The pandemic continues to evolve and cases will certainly climb this fall and winter. I would like to be able to stop all lies and misinformation, but people seem rooted in their ignorance. For the record, my elderly vaccinated son will go to school in person but does not eat inside, and my younger son will be virtual until he is fully vaccinated. I would certainly prefer that my young son is not yet isolated from his peers, but as his father, it's my duty to use the information I have to keep it safe.
