Vincent Kartheiser on the "evil" of Hollywood <em> Mad Men </ em> now

And his latest film, My Friend Dahmer.

The best known man to playPete Campbell, everyone executive advertising relentlessly ambitious loved hatred on her TVMad Men, Sounds remarkably friendly on the phone. In fact, callVincent Kartheiser A "low maintenance" celebrity is a euphemism. Known 38 years old is to live a minimalist existence without possession (he spent years in Los Angeles without car), he is the soft voice, and he is disarming prompt-call exactly the appointed minute, we planned to speak.

SinceMad Men ended its seven seasons running in 2015, the old star of the child took a wide variety of roles, more recently as a doctor in the new filmMy friend Dahmer, who arrives in the rooms today. The film, based on a graphic novel by caricaturistJohn "Derf" Backderf-Who was Jeffrey Dahmer's secondary serial killer in the complexity of infamous Dahmer youth. What attracted you toMy friend Dahmer?

My friend Dahmer Calls on me because I heard it was a casting of children and I really liked the scenario. I grew up in the Minnesota at a time when it was new on the first page. It was the first time I remember seeing an interview with someone as scary asJeffrey Dahmer and see things like cannibalism. He made a great impact on the people of my generation. When the script came around, I thought it was interesting to look behind the curtain to see Dahmer before he becomes this monster.

You look fine mouth on your roles ...

[Laughs] Does the way it seems?

From some interviews, yes.

These must have been a long time ago.

Are you less the fine mouth now?

It's like watching the child, the solitaire, in the corner of the cafeteria and being like "this kid is really picky. He really wants to be sure who his friends are. »

When you think of roles, what are you looking for now?

When I was young, it was more about how it will change the perception of me in the public or industry eyes. I do not really do that. Now, it's more to know if I like the material, if it appears as a fun way to spend my time, and how long is the commitment. Maybe you can play a really terrible character for a week, but what I want to play a really terrible character for 10 years?

If I find myself re-reading the script or want to talk to my wife or family about certain themes in the character, which is good. I had a hearing last week, and I did it again and again. A chance I arrived, I tried something else for the hearing. It's a very good sign. I leave clues that I see myself emitting.

Do you actively avoid roles that are similar to Pete Campbell?

No. Nothing looks like Pete Campbell. You can watch something and be like, "This guy is an obsequious businessman. " It is very good. But you're not going to have this writing. You will not have the depth. You could, but it will be in another direction. He was a very special person with a very special life story. The dialog has been written in a very specific way. Can I do anything always as incredible asMad Men again? Probably. I mean, who knows? But it is rare to find something that is incredible and power has that. I played a lot of characters since that time who were like Pete Campbell to be honest with you in the sense they wear costumes, they are in the industry, they are obsequious. But Pete is too unique.

Do you have different feelingsMad MenNow that you got a certain distance from it?

It is impossible, maybe for me, maybe for everyone to fully realize how something is amazing when you're a part of it. Maybe just the way we tend to look at things through the filter of nostalgia. I look back and I think it was amazing, but I wish I could have tasted more than me. I miss it.

You talked about getting rid of your property in the past and try to live more simply. Is now become more difficult as you have a daughter [his wife Alexis Bledel]?

You can not be much of a minimalist. It's always good in life to reduce things to the bare necessities and perhaps a few extravagances. It really makes it easy, whether you have children or not. It's like the old thing: you buy a toy pile of children and they end up playing with the box. In our society, we believe that we must have many things for babies and children - and there are certainly more things you need to do when you have a child - but I do not think either at the most of us go ahead, myself included. You get every little thing, then you realize that they are happy with one or two things.

What you surprised most about being a father?
I do not know. I do not know. This is a big question. Next.

Is it true that you are named after Vincent van Gogh?
No, but my IMDB page says I am. It's so impossible to get your modified IMDB page. I think I should be part of society. For three years now, I've tried endlessly to get kidnapped quotes, stuff from when I was 13 years old. You can not just. Once it's there, it's there. Now I have to live with a UCLA graduate of history and other things that have never happened.

In 2010, youtold an interviewer"Grown-ups is just a word that children use to describe someone who is not amused." Do you still believe that?

[Laughs] That's a good line. Gosh, I say these things and I do not really even think of them when they go out. This is the problem. That's why for me, especially, it is good to have a script written. Tell me what to say or I say garbage that come to light the top of my head. I do not know what children think.

In the same interview, you said: "Well, men are * ssholes at some level, is not it The powerful white man in history is as the most evil entity, is not? -this not?Mad MenS a portrait of white men doing their business, as their power come under some threat. "This looks like a relevant quote for the time in Hollywood. Are you surprised by the revelations of sexual harassment and sexual assault?

I am immensely proud of the people who are standing and provide really painful past experiences to light. That seems so brave and so unbelievable that people have this power inside of them. Am I surprised that there are all these things that come out? I do not know. It's not something I've ever known. I do not knowKevin [Spacey] WhereHarvey [Weinstein] or anything about the actual details.

But I think this statement is always true. I think there is a movement now to make things equal and bring balance. Part of this is to recognize the crime and the past, I do not know what the word is. I mean transgression but it really is much larger than the transgressions. Acts passed criminals, really. These people have abused their power. I do not know if it's just our industry. Our industry is in titles. I think if you went in the oil industry or in the finance industry, there will be changes in all. I think it's great. It's time he arrives. This will be uncomfortable for the men in power, and it will. It's supposed to be. It is necessary.
