What every leader of the first time must know how to prosper
As a leader, you should never underestimate the value of quiet confidence.
This is the first of a series of columns on leadership - and living an active and stimulating life away from the street corner - from Strauss Zelnick, co-founder of ZMC, a leading media investment company ; And the President and CEO of interactive software to take two, one of the largest video game companies in the world. Zelnick is also an avid participant in #theprogram, a fitness group based in NY.
When I was five, I announced, out of the blue, that I wanted to run a movie studio. Surprisingly, 25 years later - and only four years of graduate studies - I did it. I was named president of the largest independent film company in Hollywood. Since the first day, I knew I was above my head and I knew I would make a lot of mistakes. But I was also grateful for the occasion, I learned quickly and I had some things correctly. So, if you find yourself push in aleader role For the first time - and that you do not know what to expect, here are my lessons for you:
Listen. It sounds simple, but if you enter with flamboyant firearms, you will be subject to criticism that you do not know what you are doing. In truth, if you are like something of me, you probably do not do it. But, as Mark Twain says, "It's better to stay silent and thinking of a fool than to talk and any doubt".
So listen to your new colleagues in individual discussions. Speak as little as possible. If you are in "listen only" mode for the first weeks, you will begin to look like a leader when you develop a knowledge of the business - and what is the best road to come.
Let your job spent in the past.In order to succeed in a new job, you must go beyond some parts of the skill game that got you. If you have managed to be an excellent analyst, do not try to stay this analyst; Now it's your job to have an excellent analyst of your team.
Get professional help.I urge you to consider considering hiring a coach who will give you a rigorous standardized test to determine your leadership deficits. Trust me, you may be awesome, but you have. Know what they are and you can pay attention to weaknesses - and take action with your coach to make improvements.
Never punctuate your fingers. When things go wrong - and believe me, they will not say the fingers. You are responsible now, so take the personal responsibility for failure. Naturally, if someone makes repeated mistakes, it's probably in the wrong work and you have to solve that. Allow your colleagues to take measured risks - and support them when things do not go as planned - is the only way to make real progress over time. Oh, and when are things really going well? As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "There is no limit to what can be accomplished if no matter the credit."
Sharing yourSuccess And you are sure to have a lot more.
Ed Note: Before you start ZMC and become CEO of interactive software to be taken two, Zelnick was President and Chief Executive Officer of BMG Entertainment and President of the COO of the 20th century Fox. The first movie he is green when he became the head of a movie studio wasDirty dance,Which for many years held the record as the largest independent film that was published.
