Participants were divided into two groups, both of whom have completed a 15-minute walk. The first group chewled two gum pellets containing 3 calories while buying their walk. The second group ingested a powder containing the same ingredients as the gum, in order to determine whether it was the chewing process or ingredients in chewing gum that served as a weight loss agent.
What they found was that those who chew from the gum while walking during the walk had a much higher heart rate, an effect that researchers attributed to cardio-locomotor synchronization - a natural process in which the heart beats rhythm with repetitive motion with repetitive movement.
What is most interesting is that chewing gum seemed to increase the number of steps taken by men over 40, allowing them to burn two additional calories per minute. Unfortunately, the same thing was not true for women.
