Coronavirus is known to cause potentiallySerious damage to the lungs, inviting shortness of breath, the difficulty to breathe and sometimes lead to more serious complications, including pulmonary embolism, pneumonia and even death. However, new research suggests that your lungs are not the only organ being negatively affected by the virus-AJuly 2020 study Published in the newspaperHepatology reveals thatMany hospitalized coronavirus patients also know liver damage.

The study observed 1,827 patients with confirmed coronavirus cases that were admitted to Yale-New Haven's health system between March 14 and April 23. At the time of admission, most of the patients studied were presented with abnormal levels of four key enzymes that may indicate damage or liver disease: 66.9% had higher levels than aspartate transaminase (AST), an enzyme hepatic essential to theMetabolism of amino acids; 41.2% had abnormal levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), which converts the protein into energy; 13.5% with abnormal levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which contributes to decomposing the protein; and 4.3% had abnormal levels of total bilirubin (Tbil), a natural by-product of the degradation of red blood cells.

At the PIC Hospitalization, these figures increased by 83.4%, 61.6%, 22.7% and 16.1%, respectively. While many coronavirus patients studied had already had high liver enzymes before hospitalization, the authors of the study emphasized the separate link between abnormal liver tests and more serious cases of COVID, noting that those with anomalies. Hepatic were also more likely to undergo negative results.

However, with regard to the severity of a particular coronavirus case, all liver ailments are not created equal. This does not mean that serious COVID complications for patients with liver diseases are necessarily a precise conclusion.
