We used several data points to help us measure violent crime, hate crime, groups participating inhate speechand more general. First, we have examined the percentage of people with the first or outcome experience of violent crimes over the last year of each state, as indicated inSafeWise 2020 security status in the nation Research Report. Then we took into account the number of hate groups operating per capita * according to theSouthern Poverty Law Center. Then we examined the number of hate crimes recorded per capita, using the most recent data of theFederal Office of Investigations (FBI). Finally, we added the Paychex analysis of the amount of the amount ofDiscrimination in the workplace Complaints filed at theEqual Equal Employment Commission (EEOC) per inhabitant.

We then gave each metric a weighted value before executing them in our exclusive algorithm to see how each state marked on our 100-point hatred index, where 100 is the most hateful of a state. Overall, southern states have been higher on the hate index, six southern states sitting in the top 10 hateful locations. The Midwest also had two entries, while the southwestern and the west each had a state up there. The states of the northeastern general have generally marked lower on the hate index.
