Early coronavirus symptoms include diarrhea, loss of appetite, study

The study of the Wuhan Medical Treatment Panel for Covid-19 examined 204 hospitalized patients in Wuhan and the wider Chinese province of Hubei. The conclusions showed that 48.5% of patients said that their "chief complaint" was digestive symptoms, including diarrhea, stomach ache, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and vomiting.

Among those with digestive symptoms, 84% experienced a loss of appetite, 29% had diarrhea, 0.8% experienced vomiting and 0.4% had abdominal pain.

Although respiratory problems are the most common symptoms associated with coronaviruses - including coughing and respiratory difficulties-3% of patients analyzed had digestive symptoms but no respiratory symptoms at all.

"Clinicians should keep in mind that digestive symptoms, such as diarrhea, may constitute a feature of COVID-19," investigators with the Wuhan Medical Treatment Panel for Covid-19 wrote in their study. "Index suspicion can be raised earlier in these cases rather than waiting for respiratory symptoms to emerge."
