"It turns out that most people eat very quickly and very little that's their food properly," says Norma Lowe, M.A., NASM, C.P., a certified sporting nutrition and a New York fitness coach. "From afar, too many people eat so fast that they do not realize how full they are and end up eating too much."

On apublished study Last year in the newspaperNutrientsEating your food at a much slower rate has a direct impact on your hunger levels. Study participants who have eaten their meals at slower speeds have declared being more ample and with a reduced appetite later. The group has also delivered less than 25% of snacks overall and, in an interesting way, they were highly remembered their meals with a much larger precision than those who ate their meals faster. (The big disadvantage to note? "The slowdown group reported a reduced pleasure after their meal.")

But the reduction of your overall food consumption is not the only reason you should consider embracing your inner turtle while you enjoy your dinner. "Chewing your food slowly leads to better digestion and allows food to be used for energy," says Lowe. "The jaw more slowly and longer frees nutrients from food more efficiently."

Taking your Chewing time can also build the capacity of your body to burn calories and activate its natural defenses. A study published inObesity I found that the more you chew when you eat your meal, the more activated your metabolism, because participants could expect to burn additional 10 calories for a 300 calorie meal. And a jointpublished study in the newspaperImmunity Realized by teams of national health institutes in the United States and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom found that appropriate chewing activates the immune system of your mouth to protect yourself from the disease.

So, how should you slowly chew? According to many experts, the magic number is 32 chestnuts. "Chewing 32 times seems to be an average number applied to most food bites",write People with health. "Foods that are more difficult to chew, such as steaks and nuts, may require up to 40 masts by sip. Foods like watermelon may require less chew to break - as little as 10 to 15."

So take your time! And if you are naturally a slow eater, take the comfort of knowing that you do the right thing - and also know that your deliberate eating habitsmeans that you are likely to be confident, "misplaced" and you "know how to enjoy life".
