This brand of desserts adored has a new name
The famous Treat will now be named after a founder of the company.
Several brands have debuted new names this year due to racial stereotypes.Aunt Jemima,Ms. Butterworth'sAnd Uncle Ben's are just a few. In September, B & G announcedCream of wheat Hot cereals will get a redesign of packaging to eliminate the image of a black man carrying the head hat because of the offensive story of the character. But ice cream treatment is the last brand to get a new name - Eskimo Pies is now the Edy pie.
Back in JuneDreyer's Great Great Ice recognized that the name of treatment can be considered as a derogation. "Eskimo" is a term for indigenous peoples in northern Canada, Greenland, Eastern Siberia and Alaska. However, it was used by non-Aboriginal people to signify a "violent raw meat eater"CBS News said.
The company gave no indices to what the new name would be so far. Edy's pie pays tribute to one of the founders of the company, CandyMaker Joseph Edy, according toDive. He associated with William Dreyer in 1928 to create Dreyer and Edy ice cream brands. (Speaking of emblematic candies, here's15 classical American desserts that deserve a return.)
However, Christian Kent Nelson created the treat on a stick in 1920. It was the first chocolate ice cream bar of the US.S. and called a "cristed bar", according to theSmithsonian Institution. The name has changed in 1921 in a partnership with Russell C. Stover.
The packaging will also change, although there is no information about the design. Food diving specula that since there is already a brand of Edy, the ice cream bar could take some of the same themes. The boy of a fur winter coat with pink cheeks presented above the name of the eskimo pie will probably not remain, similar to the removal of the cream of the wheat silhouette. There is no word yet when the renovated treatment will hit the grocery freezers.
