This common bug bite can cause meat allergy
As if there were not enough enough to worry about when it comes to becoming bitter ...
As spring runs down and the summer follows shortly thereafter, there are many fun outdoor activities to hope for such activity is hiking in the woods. There is a real reason why hikers wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts while hiking steep slopes in the middle of the woods despite survey temperatures. Spring and summer are the seasons when ticks flourish and if they lock on the exposed skin, they can wreak havoc on your body. According toCenters for Disaster Control and PreventionThere are currently 16 tactical diseases at the USS, one of the most widespread Lyme diseases, which is transmitted through theblack legsor Cerf check mark.
In recent years, there is another health problem that may arise from a tick bite, known asAlpha-Gal Syndrome. Which separates this from other tactical diseases is that it is afood allergy, specifically an allergy to red meat. We consulted Dr. Purvi Parikh, allergologist and immunologist with theAllergic Network and AsthmaFor more information about how this food allergy develops after a bite, as well as symptoms and ways to manage it.
How can a tick bite cause a red meat allergy?
"You can become allergic to red meat when a bit of a pet an animal such as [A] cow, then you bite, transferring a glucid called Alpha-Gal in your blood of the animal," says Parikh. "Your immune system can then develop allergies against this carbohydrates by developing allergy antibodies called IgE. When someone eats meat again, they can have an allergic reaction afterwards." IgE stands forImmunoglobulin E, which are antibodies produced by the immune system after the introduction of an allergen on the body.
The type of check mark that transfers Alpha-Gal is called the Star Star checkboard, which is mainly found in theSoutheast part of the US.S. However, it spreads to parts of the Midwest and even New England as well.
"Usually, with this type of allergy, the reaction is delayed as opposed to other food allergies," she says. "The symptoms are the same, ranging from skin rash, wheezing, vomiting, vertigo and loss of consciousness."
Is allergy also with red meat or other types of meat?
Dr. Parikh says that beef and pork are the two most common forms of red meat. However, you could develop an allergy to any mammal that has alpha-gal carbohydrates in his blood.
What can we do to treat this allergy, if something?
To play it safe, Dr. Parikh suggests completely avoiding the meat and transporting a self-injector from a epinephrine to start.
"Every year we managed to see if allergy decreases and if the levels fall to IgE zero in Alpha-Gal," says Parikh. "The good news is that this allergy can disappear over time with an escape from meat."
What is the best way to prevent being stung by a tick?
"Wear clothes that cover all exposed areas if in a spotted area and use response bug spraying," says Parikh.
Now you know how a bite of a tick of a solitary star can cause an allergy that you have never thought you would have before. Stay safe this season!
