These 10 beaches are the "bacteria hotspots" in the United States, show new research

The list includes a beach in southern California which was closed for 1,200 days due to health problems.

The American shores along the east and west coasts are not exactly in perfect condition to accommodate surfers and swimmers this summer. A new Clean water ratio From the Surfrider Foundation warns that more than 100 million beachs will flock "hot spots of bacteria" this summer after a worrying number of positive tested beaches for harmful substances. The Surfrider Foundation prides itself on testing beach waters and other polluted areas - such as rainwater outings, rivers and streams flowing in neighboring beach communities - which are not covered by government and environmental agencies. They do this thanks to the efforts of the Blue Water Task Force of the Organization (BWTF) and friendly gardens (OFG) programs.

In 2024, BWTF Labs processed 10,120 water samples from 604 separate test sites. The report on the foundation's own waters highlights public beaches where working groups "constantly measure high levels of bacteria which exceed the standards of state health for recreational water".

The beaches along the east coast and the west coast, as well as the coasts of Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Texas, have given harmful bacterial concentrations for humans and fauna. They concluded that 80% of the beaches and sampling sites -HAS

"This shows the importance of ordinary surveillance of water quality at the beach to protect public health and safe leisure," explains the organization. In addition, these results are extremely worrying given the period of the year we enter.

According to their results, here are the 10 hot spots of beach bacteria in the United States, in parallel with their percentage of bacteria level:

  1. Kahalu’u In O’hu, Hi (92%)
  2. Waikomo Stream in Koloa Landing In Poipu, Kaua’i, Hi (90%)
  3. Park View Kayak Launch in Miami Beach, FL (90%)
  4. Imperial beach in San Diego, CA (82%)
  5. Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, CA (71%)
  6. Sound Thea Floss Floating Dock in Tacoma, WA (64%)
  7. Ball park in Melbourne, FL (52%)
  8. Windmill beach In Sag Harbor, NY (43%)
  9. Mouth of San Luis Creek in Avila Beach, CA (38%)
  10. Playa Crashboat In Aguadilla, PR (23%)

"These hot spots of beach bacteria represent a variety of recreational waters and access points that are important for local communities, but water quality conditions could endanger public health," explains the Surfrider Foundation.

In relation: You should not travel to these 21 countries at the moment, warns the State Department .

The Clean Water report is not news for many of these seaside cities, unfortunately.

Just this week, The New York Times Nicknamed the imperial beach of San Diego "one of the worst environmental disasters in the country". The area has been closed to the public for more than 1,200 consecutive days due to the increase in health problems. Like the Times Reported: "Every day, 50 million gallons of untreated wastewater, industrial chemicals and waste from Tijuana, Mexico, in the south of the County of San Diego."

In the article, the mayor of the city Paloma Aguirre Called the Imperial Beach environmental crisis as a "public health delay bomb".

The Tijuana river, which flows in southern California and the Pacific Ocean, has been tested positive for "astronomically high levels of hydrogen sulphide in the air", according to the Times .

"I consider that it is the biggest environmental justice problem in the whole country", " Paula Stigler Granados , said a local public health researcher, the newspaper. "I do not know any other place where millions of raw wastewater gallons would be allowed to cross a community."
