Mary remembers that there was an employee standing near the door to check the receipts, which often happens in Walmart. But "normally, they don't even ask," she notes. "Like, you can just leave, and they are not worried about it."

This was not the case for Mary this time, even if she said that she used a machine that was so close to the reception auditor that he and another colleague looked at her.

"I pay for everything, everything is in bag, I put it in the cart. I pass in front of them, and they are like" madam, I need to see your receipt "", she shares.

Mary says that the machine she used did not have received her after paying, which she explained to Walmart workers. They then told her that she couldn't leave without one.

"I said," Ok, can you get me a receipt? "And she said no," recalls Mary.

According to the Tiktker, she was arrested at the store for 20 minutes when the workers did not "leave [she] to leave" because she had no receipt.

"They watched me pay for that," she said in the video, which has since become viral. "It was ridiculous."

In the Facebook comments section, a user said: "We haven't bought Walmart for 5 years just because of this and self-truth."

But in a 2019 Interview with ABC10 , a Walmart spokesman told the media that "the intention of the retailer was to check each receipt". According to the spokesperson, this policy aims to prevent the theft of its stores.

Legally, however, it is more complicated. Andrew Bates, A sergeant from the Folsom police service in California told ABC10 that "a person would not have to stop unless the merchant had no probable reason to believe that the person had taken goods without paying" .

But a lawyer who represented customers in cases related to these reception checks said that if no law forces you to stop, not stop could give the store a probable cause to stop and hold you. In this spirit, most lawyers advise buyers to show their receipt when asked.
