An important part of the postal service DFA plan is modernization of its delivery and treatment network. The agency works on the consolidation of its delivery operations in sorting and delivery centers (S & DC) "larger and centralized", and its treatment network in new regional treatment and distribution centers "specially designed to purposes "(RPDC).

In an April 27 Press release , the USPS revealed that it had opened its first S & DC in Athens, Georgia, last fall, and several others in February 2023 in Gainesville, Florida; Panama City, Florida; Woburn, Massachusetts; Urica, New York; and Bryan, Texas.

"We are currently assessing more than 100 new S & DC locations on a national scale," added the agency.

The postal service said at the time that the design of 11 new RPDCs was already underway, with four of the Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte and Richmond centers intended to open this year.

"In the coming years, we expect to open around 60 RPDC across the country," the agency said in its press release.

The changes in the consolidation of the postal service do not go well with everyone. In fact, the USPS actually faces Bipartisan decline While trying to expand his reforms, reports the government.

It started earlier this summer. Democratic Congress Member Pat Ryan sent a letter to the general post office Louis Dejoy June 16 to express your " deep concern "With the agency's proposal to consolidate mail sorting centers in its New York community in the Hudson valley with the introduction of a new S & DC in Newburgh.

"If the postmaster Louis Dejoy thinks that he can play with post offices in the Hudson valley, he was unfortunately mistaken," Ryan said in a press release that accompanies him.

More recently, on July 26, the member of the Republican Congress Bill Huizenga sent His own letter In Dejoy to express his concerns about the agency's plans to open a S & DC near his Kalamazoo community, Michigan.

"This unique proposal from your delivery plan for America '' should have a negative impact on the constituents that I represent with a drop in quality of service," wrote Huizenga.

They say it will slow the delivery of the mail.

The legislators fear that the efforts to modernize the postal service will result in involuntary consequences for customers. As explained by the government's executive, these consolidation changes will make sure that the transporters of letters no longer go to their local facilities to recover the mail for their route, but rather go to the consolidated center. "My district factors are also particularly concerned about delays in the service, overtime in time and the destabilizing effects that this plan will have," Ryan wrote in his letter to Dejoy.

The Congress Member called the Plan to bring S & DCs to the Hudson valley "poorly designed", explaining that some carriers would be required to start their day with a longer trip by crossing a bridge on the Hudson river just to collect Center of the Center.

Huizenga also told Dejoy that the consolidation plans threatened to "disrupt the current delivery standard" that customers experience in southwest Michigan, because operators would be diverted to the S & DC before continuing their route.

"Consequently, the workforce would be extended, having to travel much further to reach the communities they serve," wrote the member of the Congress. "Residents of these areas, including the many older households, depend on the rapid delivery of mail for materials sensitive to time such as medical invoices and financial documents."

Huizenga asked for more data from the USPS on how its consolidation efforts should affect its region, while Ryan asked Dejoy to reconsider and reverse its plans in the Hudson valley. In the coming months, the postal service plans to organize public meetings to obtain comments from the communities which will be affected by the new consolidated postal centers, the director of government reported.

But in his opening speech at 2023 National postal forum , Dejoy said that the overhaul of the USPS network is one of the most important parties in the agency's 10 years overhaul.

"The biggest initiative, and which will address a condition that has brought about high costs and limited performance, is the overhaul of our national treatment network and the operating practices that deploy to use it," he declares. "We must now quickly run on our plans to deploy our network. It is the only way to reach the service and improvements in the costs necessary to carry out our mission to save this organization."

The general post office also indicated that the new S & DC and RPDC will only improve the agency operations and benefit customers.

"Once finished, this new network will be able to accept mail and packages at specified cutting hours and reach millions of delivery points the next day, taking the leader's postal service at the last kilometer of the leader During the last 150 miles ". Said Dejoy. "I believe that we can become the preferred delivery supplier in the country, recover the volume that we have lost over the years and capture a significant part of the future growth of the market."
