In an April 11 Press release , Walmart announced that four stores in different districts of Chicago were on the blockage.

The affected stores include the Chatham SuperCenter at 8431 S. Steward Ave., the Kenwood district market at 4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave., the Lakeview Neighborhood Market at 2844 N. Broadway St. and the Little Village district market at 2551 W W . CERMAK ROUTE.

The retailer confirmed that stores close before Sunday April 16, but pharmacies in these places will remain open "to serve patients for 30 days".

"The decision to close a store is never easy. The impact is greater than the closure of a building. It affects people - people who work, buy and live in communities near our stores - and we Let's never take this lightly ", the press read readings. "The treatment of people and communities with respect and compassion during this transition will guide everything we do."

Employees will be authorized to transfer to other Walmart and Sam's Club locations, said the retail giant.

Walmart has said that these closing stores in Chicago are also "underperforming" and have been almost two decades for almost two decades.

"We know that the community will have questions about the reasons why we are closing these locations," the statement said. "The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first almost 17 years ago - these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their losses Annuals have almost doubled in the past five years. The four remaining Chicago stores continue to face the same commercial difficulties, but we believe that this decision gives us the best chance of helping them keep them open and to serve the community. ""

Walmart added that they had implemented various initiatives to improve performance, namely the introduction of smaller stores, adding local products and "offering services beyond traditional retail". The company has also built two new Walmart health establishments and a Walmart Academy training center in Chatham, according to the press release.

"We hoped that these investments would help improve the performance of our stores," the statement said. "Unfortunately, these efforts have not improved the fundamental commercial challenges of our stores."

The closings will affect the community, said customers.

While Walmart has cited profitability as the main reason for the closure of Chicago stores, the inhabitants say that the Chatham SuperCenter, in particular, is still occupied. AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

"This is one of most frequented places To visit [to Chatham], " Nedra Crain , Executive Director of Greater Chatham Initiative, a Walmart in NBC Chicago told NBC. "It is also a regional destination. It is not only for the people of our neighborhood. I was right there on Sunday, and it was crowded."

But beyond that, customers say that closures harm communities. A catham Walmart Shopper ,, Norma Gregory , met with ABC-Affiliate WLS, saying that the news is "terrible".

"Target has left, now Walmart has left, we have nothing in our community," said Gregory.

In conversation with NBC Chicago, Regina Dickey , a buyer in Kenwood and Chatham stores, added that Walmart's decision is "not cool".

"It is as if they hadn't even thought of the people of these communities," said Dickey.

In the press release, Walmart said that the company had met with community leaders and the city to discuss the challenges before the decision to close, noting that civil servants "were opened and favorable". But by looking for solutions, Walmart said that it was obvious that "there was nothing to help us to help us to the point where they would be profitable".

Chicago officials, however, quickly noted their disappointment concerning Walmart's decision to close these four stores.

"Walmart's decision to close four locations in Chicago will leave a vacuum in the communities they serve, in particular the stores located in communities that historically lacked options for grocery and pharmacies", " Brandon Johnson , The elected mayor of Chicago told WLS. "These stores have served as a crucial rescue buoy for communities to obtain fresh and affordable products. We are committed to identifying ways to fill the gaps that these closures will leave in neighborhoods and find creative solutions to reuse these facilities profit of the community. "

For its part, Walmart has undertaken to work with local leaders to find new uses for buildings, "so that they remain important parts of their communities". The Walmart Academy will be given to the Chatham community, the company said.
