The 26 best horror films of 2022 that you should see

Obvious folk tales with frightening slashers, here are the 2022 horror films that have left an impression.

At this point, "2022 was a great year for horror" was said so much that he lost a little of his punch. But just because it has already become something of a snapshot makes it no less true. You could choose roughly any year And find a handful of stars: the horror is abundant, vast and a welcome house in some of the most creative spirits in cinema. And again, 2022 rises above other years in recent years with a truly intimidating number of films that deserve to be celebrated —The micro-budgets with traditional studio successes, completely original stories with remakes and inventive suites. The best horror films of 2022 include zombie chaos running in the stomach, black comedy, hate folk horror, slasher kills and cannibal romance. And it barely scratches the surface.

This year, the biggest challenge to compile this list was simply to see all the horror that 2022 had to offer - and I know that there are still a lot of people I missed. (I would say that choosing what to include was difficult, but I have never been so restrictive on my end -of -year horror list. The previous years fell less than 20 years old.) Although the rankings are ultimately subjective, I hope that this list will encourage people to seek films under the radar they missed, or perhaps give a film as They were lukewarm on another look. And although the genre is definitely not for everyone, if you are priest, many of these films would be an excellent starting point.

Hell

Shudder

Hell is really a family affair: it was written and led by the husband and the wife John Adams and Toby Pose And their daughter Zelda Adams . He features Zelda like Izzy, a teenager living in the desert with her mother (played by pose, naturally). Izzy is starting to learn more about the family history of witchcraft - and what she is capable of. (John and another girl, Lulu Adams , have smaller roles in the film, which John also edited, marked and shot, with Zelda.)

There is a version of this too island film to be appreciated by foreigners, existing in isolation like Izzy and his mother. But instead of working against him, the small scale and the extremely low budget make Hell Feel intimate and anchored. As tiny, the film manages to contain a rich and innovative witch mythology, not to mention a frightening ending which is both surprising and well -deserved.

Another unusual vision of witchcraft with a distinctive mythology, itself, You won't be alone is not a scary film as much as a meditation on humanity. Fortunately, he is sufficiently imbued with the kind to qualify for inclusion here. Yes, Goran Stolevski The first feature film is an art film which seems strongly inspired by the work of Terrence Malick , but these are also formal witches that take different forms by stuffing an injury in their chest with bowels. AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

I have rarely been able to vibrate with the work of Malick as much as I wish, but You won't be alone Really resonated with me. Perhaps the bowels are what makes the difference, or perhaps it is because the film of Stolevski offers a convincing entry point in his exploration of what makes a person a person, like Nevena (played by Sara Klimoska ,, Noomi Rapace ,, Carloto Cotta , and Alice Englert In his different forms) discovers sex, sex, death, sorrow and maternal love throughout his life trip.

Hatching

The horror of the Finnish body is probably not for everyone: some people have an aversion to subtitles, while others do not necessarily want to see grotesque images. (I can't tell you!) But if you are someone who thinks that a bizarre human hybrid could be cute, then you could be on the right wavelength for Hanna Bergholm's Quirky horror film, which follows Tinja, 12 years old ( SIIRI SOLALINNA ) While she tries to count with a doppelgänger hatch of a giant egg.

Hatching concerns the culture of influence and the continuation of perfection - or at least perfection for appearance - but it is also, in a more literal sense, on a monster, with some of the best practical creature effects than I I have been seen for ages. If that was all the film had to offer, it would be worth it. Fortunately, Hatching has more in his mind.

Each year, there is a film of which I hear well because I bring together my list and I feel obliged to watch before finalizing my ranking. At the end of the day Andy Mitton The harbinger is a hidden gem that I am happy to finish on my radar, but now I am a little stressed by what could be missing.

While I had reasonably high hopes for a film with Gabby beans and Emily Davis , two actors who made a name for themselves among the crowds of New York, I was not entirely prepared for the way really frightening The harbinger would be. More impressive, the film is capable of extracting a new horror from Covid. The harbinger manages to justify its pandemic height frame with both existential dread and more immediate fear which are particularly resonant for those of us who spent in March 2020 in New York.

Pig

Liberation of the magnet

Written and produced by Carlota Pereda ,, Pig is the kind of film difficult to understand. During a large part of his execution time, he looks less like a horror film and more like a dark and comical thriller or even a prohibited romance. Laura Galán Play Sara, who finds herself in a unique ethical dilemma when she witnesses girls who brutally intimidated her Richard Holmes ).

At the end of the day, Pig is all the more interesting because of the turns it is necessary, allowing narrative and gender deviations that keep things (intentionally) disorderly. As the film arrives at its conclusion soaked in blood, it is a real challenge to predict how things will happen, in particular with regard to the direction of Sara's revenge.

21
Fresh

Cannibalism: so hot now . Admittedly, it was not intentional to bring out two cannibal novels the same year - this film is certainly less on true love than in the other on this list, but it is almost enough to make a trend. (Cannibalism also appeared in Showtime's Yellow jackets And Netflix Monster: The story of Jeffrey Dahmer .) Of course, it is logical that, although many horror films have presented zombies eaten flesh and vampires draining blood, the taboo of people who eat people still have the power to shock.

Before he plunges into bloody details, however, Fresh plays like a romcom with the very attractive Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan . Director Mimi Cave You effectively attract them and then remove the carpet under you. There is nothing so subtle in the themes here - men treat women like meat and eliminate them accordingly. And even, Fresh Always pushes the envelope in its too real representation of unconventional tastes, associating horror with a satisfactory finish which helps it to descend easily.

20
Nanny

still from nanny
Amazon Studios

There are several films of directors who make their debut on this year's list - another recall of the quantity of booming talent in the horror space, but Nanny is the one who most excited me to see what his filmmaker does. Nikyatu juuu Offers such a rich representation of his distinct vision, drawing from African folklore to create something that seems new. It's also just an amazing film to watch - for which the director of photography Rina Yang also deserves praise.

Anna Diop Play like Aisha, a Senegalese immigrant trying to make a new life in New York so that she could bring the son she had to leave behind. While there is a creeping fear while Aisha works like a nanny for a apparently graceful couple ( Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Spector ), the secret buried in the heart of Nanny always manages to take you by surprise. Anchored by strong performance, it is not a standard horror rate, but it does not make it easier to shake.

I was looking back Sadness As long as I could, because it was like a challenge that I was not quite ready to take: the most Gorant, the darkest and most depraved Zombie film ever made. When I finally watched it, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's a disgusting Film which includes scenes of brutality, I would never be able to describe here, but it is also magnificent, presenting the extent of the first feature film filmmaker Rob Jabbaz capacities.

The configuration is simple: in the middle of a mutated virus that transforms people into sadistic killing machines, Jim ( Berant Zhu ) and kat ( Regina Lei ) Try to stay alive and find. Although it can be easy to reject as a nihilist gore -fest, it's really a story of survival - and yes, it's also a film about Covid. Although less manifest than The harbinger , it is not exactly subtle, with a large part of his messages (including the danger of politicizing science) clearly stated.

The problem with the vast majority of horror comedy is that he tries to do both and ends up not being scary enough or Funny enough to justify its existence. What a thrill, then, to look at something that succeeds on both fronts. Vanessa and Joseph Winter - You guessed it, both of their director beginnings - have designed a foot film found on a canceled youtuber trying to broadcast in difficulty its return which is in fact a total delight.

Joseph Winter plays Shawn, the influencer in question, who decides to spend the night in a haunted house to put his career on the right track. It is a horror film, so Duh, the ghosts are real, but they manifest themselves unexpectedly - and it is still not Death constraint The biggest surprise is that it puts you edge of your seat by looking at a really notable fight for survival (and live viewers).

Innocents

IFC Midnight

There have been many horror films that children are scary - there is yet another called Innocents , the classic adaptation of 1961 of The tour of the screw . The sub-genre of children being frightening and having supernatural powers is also a well-translated ground, but there is a reason why this deeply disturbing Norwegian film stands out among its predecessors.

Whatever the maxim of a maxim "children can be so cruel", maybe, Vogt eskil The innocent Does not fear this reality, and the results are sometimes difficult to look at. The occasional violence caused by children is disturbing in its own right. Add to this power that they do not understand - and cannot yet control - and you have a painful thriller. All this happens to the head in one of the most tense climaxs that I remember.

Saloum

Before things turn to the supernatural, Saloum Feels less like a horror film and more as an action film or an revenge thriller. In fact, these are all these things, and taking the time to develop distinct characters with rich stories before diving into the territory of gender, the film is capable of making a lot of tough weather with.

It is not really a brand against that - even with a less than perfect CGI, Saloum is a magnificent film, overflowing with vibrant color. Congolese filmmaker Jean Luc Herbulot evokes everything, from westerns to criminal dramas to monster films, infusing the history of Senegal with the Afro-Caribbean folk horror. But history - on a bunch of mercenaries fleeing a coup that learns that one of their own is on a personal mission of revenge - offers you so effectively that no matter the genre you want to put it.

Smile

still from smile

It's like feeling Smile was built around Caitlin Stasey's Ability to smile in a really disturbing way. And you know what? Good for the editor Parker Finn if that is the case. This is a film which, at least on paper, does not really reinvent the wheel: Look -alike Play the pink psychiatrist Cotter, who is tormented by a creature that can take the form of anyone, with a scary smile fixed on their face. But one of these forms happens to be Laura Weaver from Stasey, a patient who died in front of Rose, and her smile is honestly just very scary .

I don't know why I am defensive. Who cares if the intrigue of Smile feels a little close to that of It follows ? Is it important that it is sometimes weighed down by some of the most essential tropes of contemporary traditional horror? Smile knows what it is and has fun with endless jump fears and surprisingly subversive asymmetry of the too common theme of trauma. If all the horror of the studio was so effective, I would have much less to complain.

Barbaric

Another studio offer, but one that works a little more on the beaten track, Barbaric Is a fascinating exercise "how was it done?" Except that you know, in the right direction. Zach Cregger The start of a completely unexpected horror quickly became the 2022 film on which you are not supposed to read only one thing, because the less you know, the better.

In this spirit, I will not reveal the true story of Barbaric . And this is not the basic configuration - in Tess foreigners ( Georgina Campbell ) and Keith ( Bill Skarsgård ) are forced to share a Detroit Airbnb - but everything that happens after that. What I will say is that it is rare to watch a horror movie where you cannot start guess where you will go. Even if the motivations of the characters require a suspension of disbelief that I simply do not have, the pure chaos of the approach "yes and ..." of the narration makes the journey is worth it.

As a person who saw Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II Countless times - and who generally likes to claim that the many suites do not exist later - I approached the restart with the type of excitement and fear generally reserved for those who try to resolve the configuration of the lamentation . Fortunately, the new Hellraiser is easily the best episode in the series since 1988 Hellraiser II , and then yes, the bar is on the ground, this film jumps gracefully.

A large part of the credit goes to the director David Bruckner and writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski - The film team behind last year's star The night house - which captures the style and tone of Clive Barker Original story, while introducing their own fulfillments, including a clever design of Cenobite creature. X

Far too many modern slashers are trying to offer a new turn on the genre and end up falling flat. Ti West decided to go in the opposite direction with X , which proudly carries its influences on its sleeve, and ended up delivering one of the best new slashers of recent memory. It's a Chainsaw Massacre pastiche which ends up feeling much closer to the original of 1974 than this year Chainsaw Massacre , and this one had leather faces in it.

As in the films to which he pays homage, there is not a lot of plot here. In 1979, pornographic filmmakers went to a Texas farm to make their next film and ended up being hacked (among other uncompromising extremities). But the casting is of first order (more on Scream Queens Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega Below), the killed are memorable, and the coal and the dirt are so authentic for the West period, you will feel like you need a shower when everything is finished.

Shudder

You will hear people call Christian Tafdrup Do not speak evil "Dark" and "shocking" and "incredibly depressing", and yes, that's all these things, but it's also funny! The film plays largely like a dark comedy in ways, making fun of how our need to be polite sometimes leaves us in deeply uncomfortable situations. Danish couple Bjørn ( MORTEN BURIAN ) and Louise ( Sidsel Siem Koch ) are ready to ignore a lot of Patrick ( Fedja van huêt ) and Karin ( Karina Smulders ), their Dutch hosts, before things really turn.

But oh, the turn they take! Do not speak evil is a descent in hell, increasing the tension to an almost inaccessible degree before fighting with a breathtaking highest point. This is the kind of film that I never want to see again, and that I will only recommend for those I know can manage, but insofar as some of the best horror films are a experience , it is certainly a success.

Adult swimming journal Does not have the right to be as good as it is. Its simple existence looks like a miracle: the film claims to be - you guessed it - your standard Yule newspaper video, before moving on to a full -fledged narrative function which arrived on HBO Max without warning or fanfare. But the fact that it is also one of the best horror films of the year? Editor Casper Kelly could be a genius.

As with the other entries on this list, Adult swimming journal is better appreciated blind, but even if I could easily summarize the intrigue of Barbaric For you, I wouldn't even know where to start here. Kelly generously borrows horror and science fiction films that have preceded, but there is sincerity in this satire. It is partly a parody, a partly exploration of the generational trauma and the original sin of America. Above all, it is a wild driving that will assure you never to look at Yule logs (or pepper cheese) in the same way.

I promised to speak more about Mia Goth, and what a better opportunity than in a celebration of pearl , Surprise follow -up of Ti West of X It finally poses the question, what happens if you made a Sirkian melodrama which was also a Slasher film? pearl is an original story for the titular character, the killer in X , but it is a success in its own right, thanks largely to the fully committed performance of Goth. She is equally tragic and terrifying, giving her everything that gives her an eight -minute monologue or if she has a path with a scarecrow.

For me, the debate on which the film Ti West of 2022 MIA Goth is better limited to the question of which film is the most effective in translating and reverse the style to which it pays homage. And it's pearl , with its rich Technicolor shades and its fantastic musical sequence hitting like a fork towards the chest. West concludes his trilogy with next year Maxxxine , but we hope he and Goth will collaborate on several other horror films on the line.

From the soundtrack to the color palette and to the visual style, Halina Reijn Body body Feels like an A24 film par excellence. But the dialogue which may seem a little too intelligent for its own good and an atmosphere which can be described as "very online" are only a little reinforced to make the Gen-Z satire sing. Once you have taken the wavelength from the film, you realize how really smart.

Amandla Stenberg Play Sophie, who brings her new girlfriend Bee ( Maria Bakalova ), along a Hurricane Day to its best Bestie David's ( Pete Davidson ) Mansion of the family. Shortly after, the bodies started to fall. The execution is more whodunnit than Slasher, but Body body degenerates firmly into gender territory. More importantly, it retains its pointed edge everywhere, without ever sacrificing laughter while it increases anxiety and turns the screw on its characters.

The long -awaited suite of 2009 Orphan —A film known for the deliciously dislocated torsion of ASTHER, nine years ( Isabelle Fuhrman ) is really a small 33 -year -old Estonian Homicide person - is actually a prequel. Fuhrman, now 25, returns to play the role, with costume tips and cameras to make it look like a child. In one way or another, this casting choice is not the craziest thing in this film.

Fuhrman is better than ever as a whole, raising the status of icon of character for Slasher. She is joined by a game just as Julia Stiles As Tricia Albright, the family matriarch that takes Esther. There is another great twist, of course, and although it is difficult to compete with the notorious revelation of the original, First murder approach by leaning in absurdity and having fun. She obtains her wish when a predator arrives in the big plains and begins to wreak havoc like only a hunter of extraterrestrial trophy can.

Director Dan Trachtenberg Keeps his projects wrapped in mystery, and for a while, it was not obvious that Prey was a predatory film at all. Even after that, the film does not look like any previous episode, and it works in its favor. There is a deliberately stripped of the procedure, with a tight accent on the game of cat and mouse between Naru and the predator. This, associated with real respect for culture and indigenous actors, make Prey A clear step compared to the pleasure of 2018 but forgettable The predator .

Nope

Jordan Peele Could make movies in any genre, so how lucky we are lucky to choose horror? It makes sense, of course. First, because Peele is clearly a fan - he proudly quotes his influences, but also because horror is perhaps the best vehicle for the themes that Peele wants to explore. The social commentary and the satire of his films (and Get out In particular) helped popularize the concept of socially aware horror for a consumer public, but this sub-genre has always existed.

Nope stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer As a brothers and sisters OJ and Em Haywood, Hollywood horse coaches whose life takes a tour when they realize that a UFO flat on the property of their family. The film obtained a slightly more silent answer than the previous efforts of Peele, but it is perhaps because it is not as easily digested as the simplest Get out or also impulse as We . This having been said, Nope Understands some of Peele's most visceral sequences, including a terrifying scene for what you can hear and not what you can see.

He takes his Rear window -Dejace history and makes a woman who takes place as she struggles to be believed. His paranoia shares DNA with Polanski novel Repulsion and The rosemary baby , with a more feminist advantage which underlines the power of female intuition in a world where men behave very badly.

Okuno is someone to watch - it's his first feature film, both as a writer and director. And Maika Monroe , who plays the role of Julia, turns out to be one of the best queens of the cries of his generation after memorable setbacks It follows and The guest . It is an annual tradition: Rebecca Hall Plays in a new horror film and delivers one of the raw and most courageous performances of the year. To be clear, tradition so far is limited to The night house and Resurrection , but I hope we can continue. Hall is incredible like Margaret, a single mother tormented by Tim Roth David, a man violating his past. Like Mia Goth pearl , Hall can perform a long monologue (in this case, seven minutes) and obsessive. Like Goth, Hall deserves distinctions but will probably not get it because these films are simply too there for most reward voters.

And Resurrection is really there. While Margaret's trauma feels anchored in reality, the story she weaves - including the revelation of the horrible secret she kept - is more difficult to swallow. Director Andrew Semans propels history to a highlight that it is shocking because it is inevitable. The film would surely not go there, you think, while recognizing, at a certain level, that it is the only real option.

Apparently, there is a debate on the question of whether Luca Guadagnino Bone and everything qualifies as a horror film. I have always pleaded for the largest possible gender definition, but I finally don't care about how people want to label Bone and everything , as long as they recognize it as one of the most amazing films of the year. Call that a drama of passing to adulthood, a film on the road, a tragic romance - it is all these things, of course, in all by being a clever horror film on two young romantic cannibals.

Taylor Russell and Timothee Chalamet Bring a real pathos to "eaters" Maren and Lee, and undeniable chemistry between them forces you to invest deeply in their love - even if, yes, they sometimes assassinate and eat people. Guadagnino has such a compassion for his characters that it is contagious, but he never stands out from the bloody reality of their impulses. This is one of Bone and everything The most impressive achievements which, through the eyes of his filmmaker - and with two emotionally resonant performances in his center - the acts of grotesquerie become something almost beautiful.
