The good news: summer fruits like peaches and cherries are not intrinsically toxic to dogs. "If your dog gets a bitten cherry or a slice or two fishing, it should go," saidMatthew McCarthy, DVM, aveterinarian and founder From the Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Queens, New York. Unfortunately, these summer fruits can cause distress if your dog drops a whole plate. "You would not want to do too much, because too much could certainly cause a digestive upheaval for vomiting and diarrhea," adds McCarthy. "But that can almost apply to all treats for most dogs."

However, their pits are toxic.

Regarding peaches and cherries, these are the pits, leaves and stems that you need to worry about. "These parts, in particular the pits, contain cyanogenic glycosides, which vaguely resemble cyanide - the favorite of crazy cult chiefs and condemned war criminals - because it is", explains McCarthy. "And although the swallowing of a cherry pit can be something we have all done and is relatively harmless with the pit generally passed in your stools, the difference is that dogs often chew things well before swallowing."

This chewing causes the training and liberation of cyanide, which interferes with the metabolism of your dog's oxygen. "Dogs will have dilated pupils, bright red mucous membranes, breaths, difficulties in breathing and shocks," explains McCarthy. A similar reaction could occur if your puppy nibbles on the leaves and stems of these fruits.

Even if your dog manages to swallow a fishing pit or a number of cherry pits without chewing, it is possible that they can end up with an intestinal blockage, explains McCarthy. "So, if you suspect that your dog has ingested cherry or fishing pits, whether cheate or not, or its associated foliage, it is preferable to contact your veterinarian or a local animal ER as soon as possible," said -he.

Grapes and raisins must also be kept away from dogs. According toAmerican Kennel Club (AKC), even a grape or a grape can be fatal. "Fruit ingestion could potentially lead to acute (sudden) renal failure in dogs," they write. Curiously, research has not yet identified exactly what substance in the fruit causes this toxicity. If your dog swallows one, contact your veterinarian immediately.
