These 4 vision changes could be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease, says the study

If you notice one of them, it may be time for screening.

Research has long suggested that Alzheimer's (AD) disease, the most common form of dementia, can causechanges in sight. Yet because Alzheimer is most often associatedcognitive symptoms, details of vision changes in patients with my are less often discussed. A 2017 study published in the journalNature has shed light on some of the ways in whichAlzheimer's disease affects the eyes, describing four of the most common changes that advertising patients experience. Read the continuation to find out what four vision changes they observed thanks to their study - and how they could bring you to Alzheimer's at the start of the progression of the disease.

Bad color vision

By comparing the vision and the eye structure of 24 people with Alzheimer's and 24 people of 24 years and sex, the team behind theNature The study identified a few surprising ways that MA affects sight. Using Farnsworth color tests and Anthony D15 -Color arrangement tests Curly used as color vision deficiency measures - they observed that "color vision was significantly affected in patients with my".

They found that the results were "significantly modified in patients with MA, corresponding to a poor arrangement of color ceilings in patients compared to witnesses. The Farnsworth index was also modified in the subjects of the Suggesting a slight tendency to protanomalia ", a form of green- green color in which the eyes do not detect enough red and are too sensitive to the greens.

Low contrast sensitivity

Contransity sensitivity is your ability to distinguish the fine of light increments compared to darkness. The tests used to measure the sensitivity to the contrast generally present letters or images which are the darkest at the top of a graph, which then fades down where they are the lowest contrast of the rear color -plan.AE0FCC31AE342FD3A1346EBB1F342FCB

The researchers found that "sensitivity to contrast was the most affected parameter of our study". They also noted that these results were in the most directly correlation withStructural changes in the eyes.

The team also noted that this particular change in vision can be among the first symptoms of Alzheimer's. "Disturbances are present even in the first stages of advertising," wrote the researchers.

Reduced visual acuity

Visual acuity is a measure of its capacity to distinguish forms at a given distance. Visual acuity tests, such as the graph and DRR of the Diabetic Retinopathy Study of Early Treatment (ETDRS) used for this study, are probe your ability to recognize more and smaller letters on an ocular graph. You can recognize this type of test as the most used test in a routine view exam.

Although research has revealed contrasting data on visual acuity in Alzheimer's patients, several studies, including this 2019 report published in Plos One, noted thatReduced visual acuity is one of the many vision changes associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Structural changes in the eyes

The researchers used non -invasive imaging tests to take structural measures from the retinas of people in AD and witnesses groups. "For each series of scan of RNFL measurements [layer of retinal nerve fiber], we evaluated the average, higher, lower, temporal and nasal thickness," wrote the team. They noticed correlations between some of the functional changes in vision in patients with MA and the structural changes in their eyes.

"To our knowledge, there are no reports previously published by a correlation between structural changes in the retina ofAdvertising patients And the modifications observed in the sensitivity to contrast and the vision of colors ", wrote. However, they found that the results of sensitivity to contrast and the vision of colors in particular" were significantly associated with structural changes, in particular to the macular thickness (not at the foveal thickness) ".

Other studies are necessary to better understand the pathophysiology of visual impairment in patients with MA. However, their results suggest that visual function tests and structural changes in retinas can serve as a sign of "gravity and progression of the MA".

Talk to your doctor if you notice unexplained changes in your vision, especially if you think you may experience other Alzheimer's symptoms.
