The best way to be a better public speaker

Banish the fright and nervousness with this effortless movement at home.

Glossophobia, or a fear of speaking in public, is the first phobia among the Americans - yes, it is more common than the fear of spiders, heights, evendeath. In fact, by most estimates, about 75% of the population has an invoicing fear of public speech. Or, asJerry Seinfeld Put it, in his 1998 special,I tell you for the last Time"This means that, to the average person, if you have to be in a funeral, you prefer to be in the coffin than to praise."

But unlike most phobias, which tend to be based on irrational thinking, glossophobia is something you can actually overcome. All you have to do is become a better public speaker - a task that is, believe it or not, easier than to do. (Literally). The key is, simply: slow down your speech.

"When you run, people think you are nervous and the public does not receive the message"said Diane Dipeta, President of Dresta Communications, a speeches consulting company and the author ofKnockout presentations: How to deliver your message with power, punch and pizzazz. "So how do you slow down when you are a chatter?"

Simply put: self-awareness. Dresta suggests saving your presentation, listen to it and tuning your words per minute. Most people are talking about about 125 words per minute. If you are at a higher rate than that, it's time to slow down your roller. To do this, says Driesta, "take deep breaths from the belly, as opposed to superficial breathing." Slow breathing crowns a natural sense of tranquility. (It's also theBest way to stay calm when you totally want to lose it.)

Your next step is to instill something called "Beat Technique", where you add three quick beats after each sentence. "It gives the public just enough time to treat the message," says Dresta. Read these sentences aloud to see what she means: "I do not like to speak in public. [One two Three.] But I need to nail this presentation. [One two Three.] Oh, boy. "You see? The approach injects a natural cadence to your speech.

Finally, now that you have mastered basic techniques, you must learn to stick them. Fortunately, said Dresta, there are two simple methods for that. The first requires creating a system of accountability. "Find someone at work or at home and let's know that you practice slowing your speech," says Dresta. It will give you another set of eyes (and ears!) To help you stay on the good way, especially if you can not be objective of this all 125 words-per-minute. The second round is very easy: just create post-it note that say "pause!" and place them in your notes . The next thing you know, you will make "a conscious effort to pause," says Dresta.

But no matter what, there is a too old trop that you should never, in any circumstances, you can not in any way on: Imagine your audience in their skivvies. It turned out to be ineffective. And there is no science behind that, but yes, the tactics is extraordinarily frightening.
