The secret reason why religious live longer
Even if you are atheist, you can always benefit from a new study.
There are many things that prolong your life.Do not smoke, even if it is only a cigarette per day, is one of them. GetA good amount of exercise is another obvious. And increaseResearch reveals that sleep is a crucial key of longevity. But a new study,Published in the newspaper Psychological Social Sciences and Personality, has found a surprising link between religion and life.
Researchers at the Ohio State University analyzed the obituaries of more than 1,000 Americans across the country and found that, taking into account sex and marital status of those who died, those who had religious affiliations lived on averagefour years more that those who did not do it.
"Religious affiliation had almost a strong effect on the longevity that the genre does, which is a matter of years of life"noted Laura Wallace, a doctoral student in psychology of the University of Ohio and the main author of the study.
The researchers posed two theories while two people of faith may feel a longevity boost.
The first is that the religious have a greater tendency to volunteer and participate in social organizations, both research has proven to increase the years of your life. But it's not all the story.
"We found that volunteering and the participation of social organizations accounted for just less than a year of stimulating longevity that the religious affiliation provided," Wallace said. "There are still many benefits of religious affiliation that it can not explain."
Their second theory of work is that religion encourages people to avoid bad habits, such as consumption heavily or drug use, both conducting pre-mature death. Religion also encourages people to participate in wellness activities such as prayer and meditation,What studies have shown help from extending lives, especially in the elderly.
A theory not posed by researchers is that some religions still (controversial) fronce the divorce, andRecent studies have discovered that people who have divorced tend to die younger. Another possibility is that many religions adhere to the belief that there is a life after death, a concept that permeates the faithful with a sense of the greatest purpose in life and a fear has decreased by death.
One way or another, the study is good news. If you are religious, you get extra four years old for your life. And if you are not, you can always reap some of the benefits by volunteering, avoiding substance abuse and participating in well-being activities such as meditation.
"The positive effects on the health of religion discharges non-religious in certain specific situations," said Wallace. "The reversal effect occurs only in very religious cities that are not too concerned by all persons in accordance with the same standards. In these areas, non-religious tend to live as long as the religious."
