Wake School of Medicine Forestry scientists have looked at why up to 40 percent of people with the most kind of common lung cancerDevelop metastatic brain cancer. In a new study published in theJournal of Experimental MedicineThey found that nicotine can promote propagation (or metastases) of cancer cells of the lungs to the brain.

Nicotine is itself not considered a carcinogen, but the results of this study are important for both smokers and those who use nicotine products to quit. While smoking cigarettes is a major cause oflung cancer, Scientists have discovered that nicotine is what has changed some cells in the brain, move them from a protective role to support the growth of tumors.
