The brain needs a sufficient flow of blood and oxygen to do its job. When this flow decreases, this can negatively affect the brain. "We believe that the same processing processes that cause sleep disturbances also affect the ability to control blood flow in the brain, which can lead to a lack of oxygen in brain tissue,"Simon Fristed Eskildsen, PhD, one of the authors of the study explained in the declaration.

As the study notes, "Changes in the brain are associated with reduced neurotransmitters, which means that the nerves in the brain have difficulty controlling the blood vessels. " Thedepletion of dopamine, a neurotransmitter has been linked to Parkinson's disease, as indicated in a study published in 2013Sleeping Medicine Comments and a 2016 study published in theJournal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
