This southern chain filed for bankruptcy

The cafeteria style restaurant faces significant financial barriers.


Last week, Lubby's Inc., the company behind the cafeteria chains and Fuddruckers of Luby, announced that they would beliquidate the company. Now, another beloved brand from the south of the cafeteria is facing financial barriers that can be detrimental to their business.

Cafeteria K & W, a North Carolina-based chain with sites of South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, deposited Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy earlier this month. The company has operated 28 restaurants across the four states at the beginning of 2020, but has since nine from these places definitively.

According toQSR magazine, the company will sell its remaining locations, individually or in groups, or opt for a more traditional restructuring that would allow the sale to take place later.

The family business has existed for more than 80 years, serving cafeteria-style foods for dinner customers, as well as taking up and restoration. President Dax Allred noted that the company had modernized their restaurants and started offering online order and delivery in recent years. However, during the height of the pandemic, they had seen a drop of 80% of sales.

While the bankruptcy procedure is underway, the remaining locations will remain open for businesses. According to Allred, the company is seeking out of bankruptcy as a more stable business. "We hope that this restructuring will allow our cafeterias to face the storm and continue serving guests for years," he said in a statement.

Buffet-style companies have been particularly sensitive to the negative impacts of the pandemic on restaurants. Earlier this year, fresh gardens restaurants, which have exploited sugary blood and tomato chains, hadpermanently closed all 97 of their locations.
