Norovirus disease related to this Mexican chain, health managers say

So far, 13 people reported getting sick after visiting the chain restaurant.


Seattle & King County's public health officials survey an apparent Norovirus epidemic after 13 people reported sick after visiting a west coastMexican chain.

The group dined on May 21 at Mazatlan Restaurant located in the suburbs of Seattle d'Auburn, Lava. According toThe Department of HealthSymptoms of "Norovirus type disease" included bodily pain, chills, diarrhea and vomiting.

Officials have so far been unable to determine the spread of the virus. Mazatlan, who started in 1968, now has 14 pitches in the northwestern Pacific.

"We have not identified how Norovirus spread in the [impacted] restaurant," said the department. "It is not uncommon for the epidemics of Norovirus because the virus can spread through multiple contaminated foods, environmental surfaces and the person to the person."

An earlier inspection has apparently revealed "high risk violations" in the same place last year. ForayFood security news, those included:

  • Failure to keep the floods below and sheltered from loans to eat food;
  • Non-compliance with appropriate warming procedures for hot holding;
  • Failure to maintain appropriate barriers to prevent contact with naked hands with ready-to-eat foods;
  • Fault to maintain non-powered and clean contact surfaces; and
  • Failure to use properly, store and disinfect wiping clothes.

However, violations would have been resolved in a follow-up inspection the same month. When the officials studied the location on May 26, they found no risk factor "known to contribute to the spread of norovirus". Mazatlan voluntarily closed at Auburn so that the restaurant can be cleaned and disenfered, according to the Department of Health.
