Costco and Walmart fail this change

Both labeled below a 21/100 in this new ranking.

Costco and Walmart are ranked 6th and 7th on the oldest Greenpeace Greenpeace list2021 supermarket plastics ranking. Costco scored 20.53 out of 100 and Walmart scored 18.10.

To classify each grocery chain, Greenpeace reviewed the policies, initiatives, reductions and transparency of each major grocery chain in reducing the use of plastic. It also notes whether a retailer refused to participate in the investigation process. (In touch:Grocery shortages to wait in 2021, according to experts.)

Costco climbed three places compared to last year, As it continues its commitment to reduce its plastic packaging over the next 10 years. The score failure applauds the large retailer's sustainability website and promise to move from plastics used in its food courts to compostable materials. However, the company did not participate in the investigation.Greenpeace also stated that Costco's strategy is not bold enoughAnd that Costco does not reveal any information about his actual plastic footprint (Greenpeace says the company can send waste to "waste energy" facilities that burn, creating toxic fumes).

Walmart dropped a place compared to his ranking last year.Greenpeace even prosecuted the company in 2020 for "illegally and incorrectly advertis [ING] its own brand brand and brand packaging such as recyclables". The giant retailer has promised to use compostable packaging for its own brands by 2025, but Greenpeace says that the promise does not specify how much packaging will be reusable. However, Greenpeace's latest reportIs give credit Walmart to share some of hisInformation about the plastic footprint publicly, But said, like Costco, it's not a complete assessment.

Giant Giant Eagle grocery chain took the first place on Greenpeace's ranking this year, with just a score of 34.88. Aldi was then followed by Sprouts, Kroger and Albertsons. Publix and Hyhevée were 15th and 16 years old.Beloved Texas Grocery Chain H-E-B Final happened with a rating of only 1.55 out of 100 due to its lack of policies reducing plastic and not to participate in the survey.

Overall, Greenpeace states that the results still show a lot of work, such as the grocers "must immediately remove unnecessary disposable packaging, commit to eliminating single-use plastics, and the transition to reuse, recharge and Replacement solutions without package. Permutant simply unique Use plastics for another disposable material do not cut it off and continue to pollute our communities and our planet. "

It also notes that the grocery chains "need to correct the misleading labels claiming packaging are recyclable when it is much more likely to end up in a discharge or incinerator". Why is it important? Well, for one thing (beyond saving the planet), three quarters of daily plastic products are toxic,A study says.
