Is the new Starbucks unicorn unhealthy?
The brightly colored drink is all rage on social media, but it contains more sugar than half a dozen krispy kreme donuts. Worth madness?
Starbucks capitalizes on the social media craze of UNICORN with the release of its limited unicorne Frappuccino. Bright and blue pink and garnished with edible glitter, the fruity drink was released on April 19th to a lot of fanfare and colorful social media mounts.
The magic drink is "mixed cream" with "mango syrup" and superimposed with a "blue sour drin", according to a Starbucks press release. It is then stocked with whipped cream and dusting pink and blue powder. The drink begins like a purple color with whirlpools of blue and changes color and flavor with each stir that goes from soft and fruity to tangy and pie, depending on the release.
So whatexactly is in this magic drink?
The vibrant colors come from natural sources: the blue is made from spirulina (a natural blue alga) and the rose comes from a mixture of sources of fruit, including apple, cherry, radish and apple of Sweet land. But that's where the good things ends. The beverage itself is an elaborate concoction of ice, milk, Frappuccino cream syrup, mango syrup, "blue drizzle" and whipped cream. Translation: dairy, sugar, sugar and more sugar. The information on the ingredients also lists natural and artificial flavors in different syrups, who knows what kind of doubtful additives could be hidden under these mysterious labels.
Let's talk about nutrition.
But the worst party is probably nutritional facts. For a large (16 ounces) made with whole milk and garnished with whipped cream, the drink is 401 calories, 16 grams of fat (10 grams saturated), 5 grams of protein, 62 grams of carbohydrates (0 grams of fibers) , and a big 59 grams of sugar.
For a ventilation (24 ounces), you look at 500 calories, 18 grams of grams (11 saturated grams), 7 grams of protein, 79 grams of carbohydrates (0 grams of fiber) and an alarm of 76 grams of sugar. Even if you had to opt for high waist (12 ounces), it remains 280 calories and 39 grams of sugar. The FDA recommends more than 50 grams of sugars added a day for the average adult, which means that a large or venti, will put you on the limit.
The drink is not even made with coffee, so it's without caffeine. Basically, the only buzz you will get comes from a sugar rush, which will result in an inevitable crash after the cross of blood glucose and drops. This could lead to feeling hunger, lethargic and wanting to eat more unhealthy.
Our last verdict?
It's a good thing that the Unicorn Frappuccino is only available until April 23; More than four days of drinking this drink and you risk consuming too much sugar in your stomach.
If you are still curious to try this feast, we suggest you opt for a large manufactured with non-oven milk and no whipped cream. This will fix you only 170 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 4 grams of protein, 39 grams of carbohydrates and 37 grams of sugar. Always worried about the high sugar content? Divide with a friend.
