Inadequate meat could cause brain cancer, say scientists

Research connects this parasitic infection to gliomas.

The cap or raw meat is a major risk factor for parasitic infections such as trichinellosis, salmonella and Listeria, but the latest research has found an even more sinister link between consuming contaminated meat and health risks.

A recently published study in theInternational Cancer Journal Suggests that a particular parasite found in insufficient meat and dirty water can be associated with a rare form of brain cancer in humans. (In touch:The 7 healthiest foods to eat right now.)

Research led by James Hodge, the American Cancer Society, and Anna Coghill, the Cancer Cancer Epidemiology Department and the H. Lee Moffit Cancer Research Institute in Florida, has identified Toxoplasma Gondii, or T. gondii, as parasite that can cause cysts and inflammation in the brain, which can in turn lead to very fatal gliomas.

The study observed more than 750 people in the United States and Norway and found that there was a positive association between those who were positive to the T. gondiii antibodies, meaning they hadrecently been infected by the parasiteand risk of gliomas. In addition, the association was stronger for those who had a larger number of antibodies.

However, this does not mean that everyone had been exposed to the parasite is at equal risk, the authors of the study reported in a declaration toCnn.

"This does not mean that T. gondii definitely causes glioma in all situations. Some people with glioma have no antibodies of T. gondiii, and vice versa," said Hodge. "The results suggest that individuals with higher exposure to the T. gondii parasite are more likely to develop a glioma," said Coghill. "However, it should be noted that the absolute risk of being diagnosed with a glioma remains low, and these results should be reproduced in a larger and more diverse group of people."

So, what is T. Gondiii and how do you get it? It is a common parasite that generally infects people when they ingest raw meat or water from raw meat, but can also occur from exposure to contaminated cat faecales and even be transmitted from The mother to the child during pregnancy. The following infection is called toxoplasmosis, which can cause flu symptoms in some, while most never have signs or symptoms, depending on theMAYO Clinic.

Exposure to this parasite is rather common. The CDC estimates that11% of the American population 6 years old and older had been infected at some point.
