The best Hungry Howie menu items
A registered dietician rains the best and worst pizzas, wings and all you should and should not order.
For almost 50 years, Hungry Howie has been known for its affordable pizzas and deliciously flavored crusts. Although a menu filled with cheese pizza, saucy wings and submarines is unsurprisingly calories, unhealthy fats and sodium, you can always make wise choices to find menu items better for you.
Lindsey Pin, Ms., RDN, CLT, helped us review the men's menu Hungry Howie to find the least healthy options and the most nutritious items of your next pizza night.
Here are the best and worst meals you can order in the Hungry Howie menu.
Pizza
Best: Middle Veggie thin crust pizza
Apart from creating a personalized pizza with the"Build your own" option, Veggie with a thin crust is the best for health on Hungry Howie's pizza section.
"Every time you can get your vegetables, even on a pizza, it's a good thing," says Pine. Even meatless, this pizza has seven grams of protein per slice to help you fill. It is also lighter on sodium, carbohydrates and calories, then go ahead and take two or three slices!
Worst: Bacon Ranch Spicy Bacon Chicken
Deep flat pizza means more layers of marinara sauce rich in sodium and gras cheese, so it is logical that this type of pizza wins its place as the worst in terms of nutritional value on the category of specialized pizzas.
"This pizza has 440 calories for a single slice and eats only one slice of pizza? I'm sure!" Pine says. "Multiply this number with two, three or four, and you look at some very large numbers for fats, sodium and carbohydrates."
Baked subsidy
Best: Regular Veggie
In theunderwater Category Similar to the Pizza category, the Veggie option is the winner, but it always has problems here.
"Let's face it, none of the subsulties are exactly health food," says Pine. "If you looked at the calories, Deluxe Subbo submarine will win; however, this sub-ci is full of ultraProcessed meats Like pepperoni, sausages and ham. I would prefer that you have additional 40 calories and get vegetables. Although this has more calories, these layers of vegetables will offer at least one wider range of vitamins and minerals than sodium loaded charcuterie layers.
Worst: Grand Club de Turkey
Submarines can be a healthier option - sometimes. Pine noted that Turkey's submarines often seem more nutritious than some of the other filling options, but this is not the case of the Hungry Howie Turkey Club.
"You have the amount of sodium equivalent at 166 potato chips and the same amount of fat saturated than two large butter buffers," she says.
Wet
Best: Cajun Howie Bread
You do not have to sacrifice one side of the bread if you try to eat with health in mind. Pine explained that bread is usually packed sodium, especially in restaurants. But this option is lower in sodium, and it is quite low in calories and fat per piece. "Do not forget to stick to one or two pieces," says Pine. This spicy bread would be a big companion of a salad for a lunch or a healthier dinner.
Worst: deep dish 3-cheese
Add three types of cheeses to a deep-style bread and you will eat a lot of sodium and grease. It's delicious on occasion, but if you look at what you eat to stay healthy, you will better order VEGGIE pizza.
"For one piece, you consume 140 calories and what are the chances you are going to have more than one serving in addition to the pizza you also ordered? Pretty high!" Pine says. "If you add the 4 ounce side of the marinara sauce, you will add an additional 490 mg sodium."
salad
Best: Chicken Caesar
If you want a healthier option, theCaesar salad with chicken is a decent choice. Be just attentive when you add César creamy vinaigrette because it can quickly pack on calories and greases. Do not forget that this salad is quite high in sodium.
"I really like you to find yourself in some vegetables, seven grams of fiber and 35 grams of protein to keep you full," says Pine.
Worst: spicy chicken
sorry butSalads are not always healthy! Once the garnishes and dressings are added and counted, calories, sodium and fats can explode the already recommended daily values.
Pine says that despite being a salad, this option is raised in carbohydrates and sugars, and this is just the beginning.
"There is enough sodium to cover you all day," says Pine. "There is also the same amount of fat as 17 cookies in Oneo. The 18 grams of saturated fat are like eating nearly 3 tablespoons of butter. I wish the nutritional count lists also included lists of ingredients because that I would like to know which ingredients contain these high numbers. I'm not even sure these figures include vinaigrette. "Yikes!
Howie Wings
Best: original wings Howie Howie with Sriracha
Although this is the best option of the wings, they are in no way a healthy choice. Nevertheless, the original boneless wings with Sriracha are a decent choice if you fear chicken wings.
"Boneless Howie wings with Sriracha are really not much better of an option than any other wings on the menu," says Pine. "Rather than trying to choose the best option here, I say that I will go with the flavor that you like and glue at a reasonable serving size." All in moderation, as they say!

Worst: Original Howie Wings with Asian sauce
Chicken wings Are not widely regarded as a health food. Doncez them into a sodium-rich sauce and you have the best meal reserved for the occasional day of play.
"This is another of these foods where you will not eat one," says Pine, as the menu guide notes that nutritional values for a portion size of a wing. "Each wing with the sauce contains 80 calories, so if you eat six, your aperitif alone will contain nearly 500 calories. Keep that in mind when you order other items on the menu."
Better again, if you want these wings, do their meal with a slightly dressed side salad rather than eating them asaperitif Before the pizza.
Howie rolls
Worst: steak and cheese
There is no better in this category. All rolls in this menu section have similar nutrition profiles and pine does not recommend any of them - and it calls steak and cheese as the worst.
The Howie Rolls of the restaurant are similar toStromboliWhich means that they are stuffed dough sticks with pizza trim. There are three combinations of flavor from which to choose: steak and cheese, pepperoni and cheese, or chicken and cheese.
Unfortunately, the three rollerscontain trans fat, which is in most other menu items.
"This is the type of fat you want to avoid completely, because it reduces your good cholesterol HDL and raises the bad LDL," says Pine.
If you like soaking these rolls of sauce, such as garlic, you also add more fat even more saturated to the meal, which is already rich in saturated fats and trans. Once again, howie rolls are some of the single menu elements containing risky trans fat that can increase LDL cholesterol.
Dessert
Best: Howie Chocolate Chick Cookie
No matter how you cut out, the hungry pizza biscuits pie is still not a healthy option, although it is slightly better than the brownies if you are looking for a dessert to enjoy after dinner.
"Not that howieCookie with chocolate chipsis much better than the brownie, but it has the slight edge with half of the quantity of sugar with 17 grams per serving, "says Pin", even if you enjoy a "slice" of cookie at least you free on the limit recommended daily.
Worst: Howie Brownie Original with salted caramel sauce
Sometimes you just need a bit of something sweet to finish your meal. In moderation, desserts are a delicious way to enjoy the end of dinner. But if you look at your sugar intake, salted caramel brownies are not the way to follow, no matter how to ring.
"In terms of sugar cubes, 33 grams equivalent to 8 1/4 cubes," says Pine. "According toAmerican Heart AssociationThe maximum amount of sugar added a day for women is 24 grams and men is 36 grams. A single gram Howie Brownie will exceed or almost the recommended daily limit of added sugar for most people, so it's better to jump.
