FDA under fire for chemicals in food

A new petition filed by health experts challenges FDA to reconsider additives considered safe.

It's an awareness of the types of food you eat, however, there is another key role to eat healthy that is often out of your control: food additives.

The FDA allows some10,000 chemicals to add to food, some of which are known todisrupt your hormones. These chemicals are often linked to cognitive development, development and various other health problems in adults and babies. Now, health experts arefile a petition to increase the FDA's regulation of these potentially harmful substances,A request that was initially described by the Congress in the amendment of food additives of 1958.

"The FDA never considers the overall effect of these 10,000 chemicals on the health of people, which is the Congress after:" Tom Neltner, Director of the Chemical Policy of the Fund of the Environment, saidCNN Health.

The petition argues that the FDA did not take into account the impact of food additives that may have on an individual during their lives. The synthetic chemicals used to preserve packaged foods can have what is calledadditive effects On the Qi of a child while still being utero, who can finally hinder his ability to excel in the class later.

"We are talking about every child losing about 2% of his economic productivity on average with the loss of a point of Qi, or $ 20,000," said Dr. Leonardo Trarasande, co-author of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics' policy declaration (as quoted byCNN Health) "You multiply only on four million children born every year and it's a lot of zeros and a huge impact on our economy."

Unfortunately, hormone disturbing substances can be found in the most common items. For example, somenonstick cookware is made with a chemical called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known asThe PFAs, which are endocrine pterms (hormones). PFA chemicals are linked to an increased risk of asthma, cancer and thyroid disease. They have also been demonstrated to reduce responses from human antibodies to vaccines and weaken resistance to infectious disease.Pesticides On fruits and vegetables have also been demonstrated to modify hormones. How has the FDA been able to get by?

There is an interesting escape in the 1958 amendment called, fat or "generally recognized as safe" intended to save companies in the FDA review if the new additive or the new chemical was proved safe to consume.

"But they referred to salt and vinegar and oil. They were not spoken to new synthetic chemicals," was quoted NeltnerCNN Health. "And this small exemption has been extended beyond recognition so that, almost any new chemical product added to the food crosses the gap of fat."

However, an analysis of public records carried out by the Environmental Defense Fund indicates that proposals of nearly 900 gras that have been submitted by companies over the last 23 years,One concern raised by the cumulative effect Some chemicals have on the body.

Neltner says that the FDA also has the power to enable companies to make security decisions in secret and to disclose any legal evidence to the Agency. "We have not seen any evidence that the FDA has raised concerns about the absence of the notifier to include legally prescribed information," the petition states.

The Environmental Defense Fund has taken the FDA in court for its cowardsGRAS interpretation. However,The process of examining a petition such that it could take years because it essentially asks that the Agency to re-evaluate the safety of 10,000 food additives. The FDA has 180 days to approve, reject or even give an answer such that "we need extra time" to the petitioners.

Here's what you can do to limit the exhibition.

Do your best to avoid processed meats, this is particularly important for pregnant women that nitrates used for meat cure are known endocrine disruptors. Opt for frozen fruit and fresh as opposed to canned to Avoid BPA exhibition . In the same vein, avoid microwaves or drinks in containers and plastic bottles.

Other good practices include washing fruits and fresh vegetables, especially those who do not have to peel as well as rice. This will help eliminate some of pesticides.
