Surprising research on this popular snack could encourage you to store.

The common wisdom is that a calorie is a calorie, for example, 500 calories of vegetables is the same as 500 calories ofice creamThey just have very different nutrient profiles. But a new study is contestable that the hypothesis in almonds.

Search published inProcedure of the Mayo Clinic 22 men and women with high cholesterol that undertook a series of dietary interventions over a period of three months.

Two of the interventions concerned almonds, eaten for seven consecutive days and researchers followed the quantity of these calories who became "bioactiles", which means that they were absorbed completely through the digestive system. A third intervention used muffins that corresponded to almonds in terms of fibers, protein and fat.

They found that after digestion,About 20% of the calories related to fat in the almonds were not absorbed into the digestive tract. This means that calories associated with almonds consumed did not match the number of calories that were absorbed in the body. In addition, study participants did not gain weight despite grease and almond calorie.

Although the recent study is limited due to its modest number of participants, previous research has discovered similar results, according to the main author of the study, John Sievenpiper, MD, PhD, at the Ministry of Nutrition Sciences. University of Toronto.

"There seems to be a question of bioaccessing with nuts, as other researchers have shown," he says. "A labeled calorie may not be an absorbed calorie and can change the perception that nuts are healthy but must be eaten with moderation due to the high fat and calorie content."

He adds that the use of high cholesterol participants was important since people with this question.tend to fear eating nuts due to concerns about fat content, as well as weight gain.

"Almonds have been demonstrated to help reduce cholesterol and cardiometabolic health," says Sievenpiper. "In addition, they provide vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, which makes them a good choice for healthy diet."

This means that if you have counted your almonds and try to limit your calories according to their indicated amount, you may be able to give you a bump for consumption without risking additional calorie consumption. Your turn and your heart will thank you for that.
