The new music video of Coldplay music "Hymn for the weekend", with Beyonce, has been published on Friday and has already won more than 15 million views, but hit controversy for its stereotyping of Indian culture.
The video describes the Chris Martin front band as part of the role of a foreign traveler, making a ride around Mumbai in the yellow-black taxi with a colorful interior and observing through its open window Sabby Slumdog buildings and the ancient temples , the peacles, the levitation sadhus (holy men) and a child dressed in a blue deity. Meanwhile, the group plays on the street at a Holi festival (the religious festival of colors in India). Beyonce dressed in a traditional Indian outfit and with his hands covered with henna tattoo, is described in the video as a Queen of Bollywood (called Rani). The clip also includes a real bollywood actress, Sonam Kapoor, which has barely a few seconds of screen time. I wonder what was the reason for it ...
Looking at this video, your first thought would be - beautiful! Everything in this music video screams India. But what kind of India? Let's discover some of the reasons why Coldplay and especially Beyonce have faced a black of ments on the internet.
Beyonce's video is a problem because it is reductive and uses India as an accessory for a capitalist gain. A land and a culture that it has no right to.

When Beyoncé has problems for cultural ownership ... Nobody is sure. Beyoncé never makes any problems for nothing!

Of course, India is more than components and clichés of the video, but it is shown in a glorified way in the video. Yes, it's more like a quick look at India through the eyes of a tourist than to have the viewer to get a real picture of the country, which is perhaps best to leave at the MIA. But the way it is presented is beautiful and makes us learn to know more about this exotic and mysterious place, and its inhabitants, which are so vibrant rich in spirit. After all, "Hymn for the weekend" is only art, for the love of art!
