Sherlock: the evaluation of the abominable bride (spoilers)
First of all, celebrate the fact that Sherlock is finally back in our life, even if it is a special episode. It's been two years since the last wish was broadcast in January 2014 and the spectacle fans were dying to see a Sherlock action. The abominable bride was broadcast on January 1st and that was certainly the best gift of the new year, any Sherlock fan could have hoped.
Let's first remember how the last wish ended. Sherlock pulls Charles Augustus Magnussen, a.k.a. Napoleon blackmail, face and is sent abroad by Mycroft. However, only a few minutes after reaching the plane, Moriarty appears on all the screens of the country saying, "Have you missed you?" Naturally, Mycroft calls Sherlock to let him know that he returned after being exiled for only 4 minutes because England needs him.
Since then, we all wonder what will happen next. Is Moriarety in fact back? How could he eventually have survived? We have all seen her blow her own brain. Well, the new episode has a very interesting and tropeous way to answer these questions.
We come back in time in the Victorian era. Where are we? The abominable bride is a brilliant episode that emphasizes the fact that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson adapt perfectly to any period. This could be the 19th century, they might not have smartphones and laptops, but they are also brilliant to resolve crimes in the same way. Sherlock is always a high functional sociopath, even if this term does not exist the 19th century and John is always his faithful friend who is ready to run and help him solve mysteries of murder.
Ms. Hudson is always hilarious and the Lestrade still needs help. Mycroft is still essentially the British government, even if it has won a few hundred extra books. Mary, John's wife is on mission to break the patriarchy and Molly Hooper, which masked as a man for most of the episode "to move forward in the world of a man". The Moriarty is as crazy as we remember it and incredibly even more elegant. Even Anderson is here, being his stupid, caregiver. The only things that are different are fashion choices and the period, but the characters are always the same, and they do not feel out of place, not even a little.
There are two themes in this episode that I would like to draw attention. First, the issue of equality is raised. Seeing Mycroft talking about women as the invisible enemy they should not overcome, but must certainly lose: "Because they are right. And we are wrong" was amazing. A message as powerful. And Marie, campaigning for the right of women to vote, made me proud more.
Sherlock's addiction is another subject that has been brought to Sherlock's attention. It's never a secret that Sherlock is a toxicomaniac. It has been referenced several times in previous episodes. We have seen it act as if it is high, we have seen the "three problematic patches", we heard mycroft and john talking about danger nights, we saw Sherlock looking around the apartment for the drug . However, none of these mentions and references were as blunt as the syringe and "list" in the abominable bride. Makes me ask me exactly how far will they go with this subject?
The main mystery is the ghost bride who kills men and holmes bursts excitement. It is only the only thing, throughout history, there are these very perceptible parallels with Moriarty and he visibly throws Sherlock and the public. We are left wonderfully, is it really going on or is it a kind of dream sequence?
Spoil alert!Proves that it is neither one of these. In fact, Sherlock is always on this plane, he has overdose on medications to understand if Moriarty is actually back, and all this time we make wander around his palace of mind. The good news - Moriarty is definitely dead. The bad news - we will have to wait until 2017 to find out what happens next.
